Ahead of the 2027 election, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has visited Nigeria’s former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, at his Minna residence in Niger State. Obi, in a post on his X account on Thursday, confirmed the visit, which came after his meeting with Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi....Read Full Article >>➤
The Labour Party leader revealed that his discussions with Babangida revolved around key national issues. “After leaving Jigawa State, I traveled to Minna, Niger State, to visit a father figure, elder statesman, and leader, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, at his residence. It was an opportunity to wish him a Happy New Year and exchange thoughts on national matters.
“General Babangida’s wisdom and insights remain invaluable, and I always cherish the opportunity to meet him and benefit from his guidance and advice,” Obi shared.
Obi has also said that there is no merger deal yet with the People’s Democratic Party, the New Nigeria People’s Party or any other party.
The former Governor of Anambra State stated this on Thursday morning when he held a press conference in Abuja on the state of the nation.
He added that no agreement has been established with other parties yet.
He rallied all lovers of Nigeria in the political space to come together in 2027 and defeat the All Progressives Congress, which he accused of mismanaging the country’s resources.
Also, Obi described the security situation in the country as unfortunate, saying Nigerians die needlessly due to banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping-for-ransom.
He said the level of corruption in Nigeria remained high and so is the cost of governance which has led to an astronomical increase in public debt under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu of the APC.
Obi stated that government officials willfully mismanaged public funds in 2024 through incessant foreign travels.
In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu came out tops in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states, and secured significant numbers in several other states to claim the highest number of votes — 8,794,726, almost two million votes more than his closest rival — Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
Atiku, who has ran for president six times, got 6,984,520 votes, while Obi, a first-time contestant, secured an unprecedented 6,101,533. NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor, finished fourth, claiming victory in his state — Kano. He secured 1,496,687 votes.
Interestingly, Obi and Kwankwaso were members of the PDP months before the last poll but cited irreconcilable differences as reasons they exited the party.
NNPP vows to ensure Tinubu’s defeat in 2027
In the same vein, the Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Hashimu Dungurawa, issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, cautioning him to brace for overwhelming electoral defeat in 2027 if his administration continues with what he described as anti-people policies.
“With your unfriendly anti-masses policies and your stance on them, just prepare for defeat in the next general elections. You either change them, or we Nigerians will collectively change you,” Dungurawa declared during a press briefing in Kano.
Dungurawa expressed confidence that the NNPP is poised to secure victory across all 36 states, including the presidential seat in the 2027 elections.
He asserted that Nigerians are rallying behind the party and eagerly awaiting the next general elections.
Reflecting on Tinubu’s policy trajectory, Dungurawa remarked, “From the podium on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu started reeling out anti-masses policies as if Nigerians had stepped on his toes. He kept slamming such unfriendly policies on us up till today.
“Therefore, with these challenges and many more deliberately created by the APC-led government, it is just a matter of time. We will certainly ensure that Tinubu is out in 2027 and Kwankwaso, a true democrat, steps in.”
Dungurawa highlighted NNPP’s growing influence, pointing to the establishment of offices and party structures across states and local governments nationwide.
He described this expansion as a testament to the party’s readiness to claim both state and federal positions in 2027.
“The NNPP recorded tremendous successes in 2024 and is on course to achieve more in 2025,” he noted.
Praising Kano State’s progress under NNPP leadership, Dungurawa said, “You are all living witnesses that we are lucky to have a God-fearing governor who has restructured Kano State in terms of infrastructure, empowerment, and human development.
“Kano can now compete favourably with any modern city globally, especially with the state-of-the-art facilities made available in the metropolitan and rural areas.”
Dungurawa raised concerns about alleged Federal Government plans to impose a one-party system, describing it as the biggest challenge facing the NNPP.
He urged the administration to prioritise human-friendly policies to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
Addressing rumours of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s defection to the All Progressives Congress, Dungurawa dismissed the claims as baseless.
“It is a mere allegation to tarnish his reputation and towering popularity,” he asserted.
