In a statement on Thursday, NLC’s Head of Media, Benson Upah, criticised KEDC’s management for what he called an illegal and unjust process, warning that the union would escalate its response if the affected workers were not reinstated.
“We commend the protesting workers of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company for conducting themselves peacefully despite repeated provocation by KEDC management,” the statement read.
“Our hearts are with them in this heroic struggle against illegality and injustice. The manner in which KEDC carried out this mass dismissal, disregarding due process on redundancy, is not only unacceptable but also mind-boggling.”
The labour union demanded the immediate reinstatement of the sacked workers to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
“We call on KEDC to come down from its high horse and embrace reason by unconditionally recalling the affected workers. This is the only way to restore industrial harmony and normal operations in its coverage areas,” Upah stated.
He further warned that the NLC would not hesitate to intensify its actions if the management continued to justify what he termed an unjust process.
He added, “Prolonging this act of aggression risks triggering a major solidarity action. Congress will give the ongoing protest the necessary backing if KEDC fails to see the wisdom in an early resolution.
“As a first step, we call on all our affiliates in Kaduna to join the protest in solidarity.”
