Pulisic was chasing a loose ball away from a dangerous area yet the midfielder chopped him to the ground, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot. The American took on the responsibility, and converted from 12 yards even if Di Gregorio nearly got to it.

There might have been the risk that the game would then meander towards penalties (with no extra-time), but Milan took the lead just four minutes after equalising. It required a huge stroke of luck, with Musah whipped a cross intended for the runners in the middle, but it took a huge deflection off Gatti and wrong-footed Di Gregorio.
