Fom Daniel Chollom, a member of the House of Representatives, representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency of Plateau State, has formally defected from the Labour Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress. This was made known on Tuesday at the plenary session, a day after he sent in his resignation letter.
According to him, he left because there are divisions in the Labour Party leadership and also his willingness to support the vision of the government to work towards the progress of the country. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas then read the resignation letter to confirm the required procedures were done before the defection took place.
His defection has attracted reactions from different quarters. Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi berated the action, labeling the defectors from the Labour Party as lacking ideological commitment, and called for the declaration of Chollom’s seat vacant.
Chinda equally faulted Chollom on not following due process, saying that he should have written his resignation from the Labour Party at the ward level and also provide evidence to the House before writing his letter of defection to the leadership of the House.
However, Chollom, while appreciating the Labour Party for the opportunity given to him to become a member of the National Assembly, maintained that he defected to the APC as a means to actively participate in delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians.
