This emerged as the Search Engine giant unveiled the findings of its 2024 Year in Search for Nigeria, showcasing the most popular searches, notable individuals, actors, musicians, topics, questions, and other subjects that captured Nigerians’ attention during the course of the year.
Google’s Year in Search is an annual analysis that reveals the top trending lists and also spotlights what the world searches to see, learn, and do.
Bobrisky’s emergence as the most searched Nigerian didn’t come as a surprise. The cross-dresser and socialite became more a subject of discussion when in April this year he was apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on alleged case of naira abuse. He was later sentenced to six months in jail without the option of a fine.
The issue of the section of the prison the cross-dresser will be kept became a curious discussion among Nigerians, eliciting so much interest about him.
After serving his jail term, there was rumour he was allowed frequent visits from family and friends, had a furnished single cell, a humidifier, access to television, a fridge and even a phone while in Prison.
This sparked another round of search for the socialite and on October 20, 2024, he was again arrested by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) while allegedly trying to leave the country through Seme border. She spent the night of that same day in custody and on October 21, 2024 was transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
Beta Edu is another popular Nigeria her emergence in the top search is not surprising. The Nigerian medical doctor turned politician, served as national women leader of All Progressive Congress, APC, before she was appointed Health Minister at the start of President Tinubu’s administration in May 2023.
However, her appointment was shortlived after he was suspended in January 2024 following a national outcry over an alleged ?585 million scandal.
Many people anticipated she could be returned, particularly as she was alleged to be close to the first family, but that was not to be.
On the sports personalities, Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Nwabali became a celebrity of some sort after his heroics at the African Cup of Nations competition in Cote d’Ivoire.
Although Nigeria lost the finals to the host nation, the Super Eagles were on the lips of every African due to how Nwabali ensured very few goals went past the sticks he manned.
Another reason Nigerians may have searched Nwabali more on the net could be in condolence for the loss of his father recently.
In Nigeria, this year’s results show a continued interest in the political and economic landscape, with searches related to the US elections, the new national anthem, and the national grid topping the news category in this order.
The music scene in 2024 was marked by a surge in popularity for artists like Shallipopi and Khaid, who also featured prominently in the overall personalities list. The top trending song was “”I Don’t Care” by Boy Spyce”, followed closely by “Ozeba” and “Commas” by Ayra.
Nigerians also showed a keen interest in understanding the lyrics of various songs, with “Ogechi lyrics”, “Ozeba lyrics”, and “Omemma” by Chandler Moore leading the searches in the lyrics category.
Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Google West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, said: “The 2024 Year in Search offers a unique lens into the questions, interests, and conversations that shaped the lives of Nigerians this year. From cultural milestones to pressing concerns, these insights reflect how Search continues to be a valuable tool for users to navigate and better understand their world”.
Also, Nigerians continued to demonstrate a strong interest in entertainment, this year, with movies like “A Tribe Called Judah”, “Treasure In The Sky”, and “Damsel” topping the movie charts. The top TV series that captured the interest of Nigerian netizens included “Supacell”, “My Demon”, and “Queen of Tears”.
In the culinary world, Nigerians explored diverse recipes with “Pornstar Martini recipe” leading the searches.
