Ultimatum and Justification: In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Kainerugaba declared that he had the full backing of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who is also his father.
The military chief cited attacks on the Bahima ethnic group as a key reason for his warning. “My people, the Bahima, are being attacked. That’s a very dangerous situation for those attacking my people. No one on this earth can kill my people and think he will not suffer for it!” Kainerugaba wrote.
Rising Regional Tensions
Kainerugaba’s threat has raised fears of escalating regional conflict, particularly as clashes between Congolese forces and the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels intensify.
On Friday, an M23 leader claimed the group had entered Bukavu, the second-largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, following their capture of Goma late last month.
Uganda’s Role in Eastern Congo
Uganda had already bolstered its military presence in eastern Congo, deploying at least 1,000 additional troops earlier in February under an operation aimed at helping the Congolese government combat Islamist militants.
Despite Uganda’s official mission, Kainerugaba has been publicly supportive of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who continues to deny allegations that Rwandan troops are fighting alongside M23 rebels.
