Following the normal procedure, the politician was invited, only for him to be handcuffed when he got to the EFCC office in Abuja, the detailed report, including the group who wrote the petition will be disclosed here.

The operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, over the alleged stealing of N700 billion.

The ex- governor was invited by the anti- corruption agency to answer the allegations of money laundering, diversion of funds, and stealing. On getting to the corporate headquarters of the agency in Abuja on Tuesday, he was detained.

Emmanuel served as the governor of Akwa Ibom between 2015 and 2023 and when he left his office, no one suspected that he embezzled public funds until recently when a group exposed him.

A source who confirmed his arrest under the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, revealed that a civil society organization called the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking wrote a petition against the former governor.

The source further revealed that investigations uncovered the withdrawal of N31 billion from an account named ” Office of the Governor” , the money was withdrawn in cash and this happened between 2019 and 2023. An investigation is ongoing on the remaining balance.

However, the ex- governor has been held in custody. The Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Dele Oyewale, is yet to release or really any official statement on the arrest.
