Taiwo Oyedele Clarifies Stance On Using Tinubu-Linked Alpha-Beta For Tax Collection
Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the presidential committee on tax policy and fiscal reforms, has refuted any plans to employ Alpha-Beta Consulting or other consultants for tax collection.....Read Full Article>>
During a town hall meeting hosted by Channels Television on Monday, Oyedele addressed concerns about using external consultants like Alpha-Beta, a firm known for managing tax collection for Lagos State and linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He highlighted that relying on consultants for tax collection is a significant economic challenge, stressing that governments should not depend on external firms for such crucial functions.
“In fact, we debated at the committee level about including a provision in the law that prohibits governments from using consultants to collect taxes. We see this as one of the biggest economic problems,” Oyedele stated.
“I can confirm 100 percent that there is no plan whatsoever to use consultants for this purpose.”
According to Oyedele, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) already has the infrastructure needed for efficient tax collection, particularly through its TaxPro Max platform. He noted that minor adjustments to the system are sufficient to implement the proposed reforms.
“For instance, once these bills are passed, we can simply update the system to require companies like MTN to indicate the states where VAT returns are generated,” Oyedele explained.
He added that similar measures would apply to other large corporations, such as the Dangote Group and financial institutions, ensuring compliance without external assistance.
‘Governors Were Consulted on Tax Reform Bills’
Addressing concerns about consultation, Oyedele emphasized that state governors were actively engaged during the drafting process of the tax reform bills.
“This is not a rushed process. We consulted extensively. We had a session with the governors’ forum and two sessions with the national economy council. We also spent almost a full day with finance commissioners from across Nigeria,” he said.
Oyedele further revealed that the committee held multiple meetings with heads of internal revenue services from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Letters were sent to governors in each geopolitical zone, offering detailed discussions with their cabinets.
“Some governors didn’t have time for us, but for those who did, like the governor of Lagos, we had thorough engagements. In Lagos, a joint committee between my team and the state cabinet worked on the details for over six months,” he added.

He maintained that the committee remains open to further consultations, dismissing claims that stakeholders were not adequately involved.

Meanwhile, Tinubu once more assured Nigerians that the ongoing reforms in Nigeria would improve Africa’s economic prospects.
Speaking Thursday night at the State Dinner organised by the French government for him at Palais des Elysée in Paris, the President said: “Regarding Nigeria’s economy, as you have said, we have embarked on a very strong reform, and there is no looking back. It is in the interest of the entire continent that we don’t continue in the past. We must brace up for the future with commitment and optimism. And with the courage of our founding fathers.
“President Macron, all your efforts about Africa, I promise you shall not be in vain,” he stated.
President Tinubu while noting that the future remained bright for better relations with France emphasised that he was glad to be leading Nigeria during the trying times of the nation.
His words: “It is a good time for all of us. I cannot be prouder than I am to be President of Nigeria at this challenging time. The President also lauded the amicable relations with French President Emmanuel Macron, appreciating his interest in Africa.
He also expressed confidence that Macron’s goodwill would foster stronger bilateral ties, benefiting the entire continent.
The Nigerian leader encouraged both Nigerian and French citizens to uphold the cordial relationship shared by their nations.
First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu accompanied the President to the dinner, along with top Nigerian government officials, businessmen, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
“It is a great honour for me to be here. And it’s been a great day because you have arranged a great reception.

“You stirred my excitement and caught my attention as a leader. Thank you.
“France went through a lot to put freedom, democracy and commitment together. Your effort is very inspiring for us to work together. We have no choice but to build a continent that connects, resonates for its people, and cares about the people and development,” President Tinubu said.
He thanked the French leader and his wife, Brigitte, for the State Visit and the three-day reception.
“In addition to the economic prospects and what you mean to Europe, to America and the African continent, there is a good prospect that you will not forget who we are. You open your doors for investment for our friends and brothers here. I could see Aliko Dangote, Aig Imoukhuede, and Tony Elumelu here. You have memories of your friends in Nigeria. You asked for Mike Adenuga earlier today. Thank you,” he added.
In his remarks, President Macron acknowledged Nigeria’s leadership in Africa, recognising its role as a ‘big brother’ to the continent.

JUST IN: Why Tinubu’s tax reform will destroy the north — Gov Zulum
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has rejected the tax reform bills, sponsored by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying the bills will destroy the north. The bills which seek to prioritize the location of consumption as the basis for sharing Value Added Tax, have faced stiff opposition, especially from the north, with stakeholders calling for its withdrawal.....Read Full Article>>
Northern governors, traditional rulers, and Northern Elders Forum have rejected the proposed bills, saying they were not in the interest of the nation. However, despite protests and rejections of the pieces of the legislation, the Senate passed the bills for second reading on Thursday despite rowdiness at plenary.
Speaking on the development in an interview with BBC Hausa service, the governor expressed displeasure over how the bills enjoyed speedy and smooth passage to the current phase when other bills had spent several years to scale through.
He said, “We condemn these bills transmitted to the National Assembly. They will drag the north backward, and not only the north, South East, South West and some states in the South West such as Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, will have problem with these bills.
“It is not opposition. This, based on our understanding, is something that will destroy the north in its entirety. Therefore, we call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and others to review this decision. He secured 60% of his votes in the north. He should not listen to those telling him that northerners are not supporting him.
If our interest is served, that is all. What we need now is the withdrawal of the tax bills.
“Why all the rush! There’s a petroleum bill that was presented but it took almost 20 years before it was finally passed. But this one was transmitted and now receiving legislative attention within a week. What we are saying is that, let it be treated carefully and with caution so that even after our exit, our children would reap the benefits.
“How we see it is, if these bills scale through, we will not be able to even pay salaries. And if we paid, it won’t be sustainable the following year.”
Asked whether the bills would further exacerbate hunger and poverty in the north, Zulum answered in the affirmative, adding, “Including security. But they’re saying otherwise. We are against it, Lagos is against it; that it will drag it backwards. If this is the situation, then why won’t they rescind it? Our National Assembly members and even some from the Southern region are not in support of these bills.”
The governor, however, clarified that his objection of the bills was not a pointer of any opposition against the government, maintaining that it was only a call to reverse the decision.
“This is our stand and doesn’t mean that we are against the government. We supported and voted for him (President Tinubu). But these bills will not mean good for us.”
Asked to comment on whether the lawmakers would pass the bills when lobbied and given kickbacks, Zulum said, “There are rumours around but we are not certain. But you know we are in Nigeria! What I am saying is that let us all be patriotic. We have children, grandchildren and relatives who are in villages, therefore, we should be careful not to endorse anything that would impede the progress of the north and other regions. We are appealing to the President to listen to us and address our concerns.”
