Stewart Robson has claimed that one Arsenal player’s passing was as poor as he has seen in a long time after the Gunners played out a goalless draw with Manchester City on Sunday. Mikel Arteta’s men proved a real point by avoiding defeat at the Etihad Stadium. They rode their luck at times, but they also came incredibly close on a couple of occasions to breaking the deadlock….CONTINUE READING
Arsenal defended brilliantly.
The likes of Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka have been lauded for their work-rate and their contributions at the back. But things were a lot more challenging at the other end of the pitch.
As shown by Whoscored, the nine names who completed the most passes in the game were all Manchester City players. So when Arsenal did have possession up the pitch, it was vital that they made the most of it.
Unfortunately, Martin Odegaard was not at his captivating best at the Etihad Stadium. The Norwegian misplaced 11 of his 32 passes during the game.
And speaking on ESPN after the full-time whistle, Robson claimed that he has rarely seen the Gunners captain use the ball so poorly.
“Before the game, I thought Arsenal would play better than they did today, in terms of the attacking side of the game,” he said.
“Saka is their big threat. But Saka wasn’t able to get into the game particularly well. He had to do a lot of defensive work. And on the other side, Jesus was often coming in on his right foot and had one or two efforts early on in the game, but drifted out of the game. Havertz couldn’t really hold up the play.
“Odegaard, in terms of his passing, was as poor as I’ve seen him for quite some while. So he’ll be disappointed with the attacking side of the game.”
Odegaard has been absolutely exceptional throughout the season. So it is hard to be too critical that he was unable to really unlock the Manchester City defence on Sunday.
As shown by FBRef, Odegaard is third in the Premier League this season for key passes. And he is one place higher for progressive passes, with only Rodri ahead of him.
Remarkably, he has also completed 84 passes into the penalty area. He is 16 ahead of anyone else across the entire division, with Bruno Fernandes on 68 right now.
There were times when he appeared to be millimetres away from getting it absolutely spot on against the Cityzens on Sunday. And on another day, he could have easily been the difference maker.
There is absolutely no question that Odegaard will step up on plenty of occasions before the campaign concludes.
And with this title race threatening to go right down to the wire, Odegaard’s form could have a major say on whether Arsenal do go one better than last year.
