ASUU Announces Nationwide Strike

Speaking at a press briefing held at the University of Abuja on Sunday, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed that all branches of the union have been directed to withdraw their services immediately.

Piwuna stated that the strike action follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued on September 28, 2025, adding that the Federal Government has failed to address the union’s long-standing demands.

“Compatriots of the press, it goes without saying that there is nothing sufficient on ground to stop the implementation of the ASUU-NEC’s resolution to embark on a two-week warning strike,” he said.

ASUU’s Demands and Ongoing Dispute

The union’s grievances center around university funding, lecturers’ welfare, and the full implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, which remains unresolved after multiple negotiations with successive administrations.

According to Prof. Piwuna, the strike will be “total and comprehensive” across all public universities, as agreed during the union’s last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

Government’s Response

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed earlier in the week that the Federal Government is in the final stage of discussions with ASUU and other university unions to reach a sustainable solution to the recurring crisis affecting the country’s tertiary institutions.

The ongoing standoff once again raises concerns among students and parents, many of whom fear a prolonged disruption of academic activities if the current talks fail to yield results.
