In his newly published book, Babangida challenges the prevailing narrative that the 1966 military coup was orchestrated solely by Igbo officers with an ethnic agenda.
According to him, the coup was a military takeover involving officers from various ethnic backgrounds, driven by widespread dissatisfaction within both the military and the political elite at the time.
The coup, which was Nigeria’ s first after independence, resulted in the deaths of several prominent leaders from the Northern and Western regions, leading to ethnic tensions that eventually contributed to the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War.
For decades, it has been widely labelled as an ” Igbo coup, ” a claim Babangida describes as a deliberate distortion of history that has fuelled division among Nigeria’ s diverse ethnic groups.
His statement has reignited discussions on Nigeria’ s civil war and the treatment of the Igbo people in its aftermath.
Reacting to Babangida’ s revelations, Arise TV presenter Oseni Rufai called on former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon to explain his role in the events leading to many injustice against the Igbos.
