He emphasized that the commission remains a crucial part of the government’ s broader strategy for regional development. Speaking at a ministerial briefing in Abuja on Friday, Momoh clarified that the former Niger Delta Ministry has been absorbed into the newly established Ministry of Regional Development, which now oversees multiple regional development commissions.
According to Naija News, speculation about the possible dissolution of the NDDC emerged following reports of an alleged conflict between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the NDDC’ s Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku.
However, the NDDC dismissed these claims last week in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Seledi Thompson- Wakama. The statement described the rumours as misleading and intended to create unnecessary tension within the commission.
Thompson- Wakama reaffirmed that the NDDC Managing Director maintains a strong working relationship with the FCT Minister and other key stakeholders in the Niger Delta region. He further stated that the allegations were aimed at causing division within the NDDC board and undermining the cooperation between Ogbuku and Wike.
Beyond infrastructure, the Minister highlighted the government’ s investment in human capital development. He announced that the ministry has provided 250, 000 start- up grants to 300 young people who successfully completed vocational training programs in 2023 in the Niger Delta.
Momoh reaffirmed the government’ s commitment to sustainable regional development, assuring stakeholders that the NDDC will continue to play a key role in advancing economic growth and infrastructural progress.
