Reports from the area indicated that Governor Namadi, the two former governors, the Defence Minister, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker of the State Assembly, members of the state and legislative councils’ state part (APC) and leaders converged at Birninkudu township stadium to attend a Citizens’ Engagement Programme tagged “Gwamnati da Jama’a” which literally means “Government and the People”, organised by the state government.
Online Tribune reports that the Jigawa State Empowerment/Employment Agency, Dr Habib Kanya, regarding their achievements in the area (Birninkudu Local Government) under Governor Namadi.
Gathered by Online Tribune at the venue of the program, the audience, primarily youths, in a united voice disapproved of the claims made by the two officials, forcing them to cut their presentations and allowing others to speak.
According to Online Tribune, the angry youths booed the Health Commissioner and the DG of the Empowerment and Employment Agency while they narrated their performance in the area, shouting at them and disputing what they said with shouts of “Karyane! Karyane!” (meaning “It is a lie”).
Dr Kainuwa was forced to abandon his speech and started defending himself before the governor and other dignitaries by saying “Bakaryabane” (meaning “It is not a lie”).
Apart from the duo, other commissioners addressed the audience at the forum, including those of Works and Transport, Engr. Gambo Shuaibu Malam, Higher Education Science and Technology, Prof. Isa Yusuf Chamo, and Special Duties, Auwalul Danladi Sankara, among others, without interruptions.
At every step, the commissioner’s claims were met with “Kariya ne” bayi ba (meaning “It is a lie, it was not done”), to the surprise of many dignitaries, who could not hide their disappointment as the drama unfolded.
Similarly, Director-General Kanya also faced a barrage of shouting “no” when he attempted to highlight his agency’s achievements, where they questioned the validity of his statements.
Speaking at the programme, Governor Malam Umar Namadi announced his determination to investigate the matter and promised actions accordingly.
According to him, “The main objective of the programme is to meet between the government and the public. Government officials would tell the people its achievements and plans for the respective local government area, and the people to testify or otherwise, and in return, the people to tell the government what and where they need or to adjust where necessary.”
Governor Umar Namadi assured the people that his administration would get to the bottom of the matter by probing the claims by the top officials of the state government, adding that the government would take necessary steps to bring anybody found wanting to order.
According to him, “This is the essence of this programme, it is intended to bring the government closer to the people and emphasise that his administration’s priority is to ensure transparency and accountability.
“We have listened to what the people of Birnin Kudu have said here and I can assure you that we’ll take action.”
He described the programme as very good because it will ensure that not only will the government be held accountable to the people, but it would also give the people the opportunity to engage directly with the government in order to put their views across.
Malam Umar Namadi reiterated his administration’s commitment to executing projects that align with the Jigawa citizens’ online 12-point agenda.
The governor therefore urged the youth to be law-abiding and disciplined in all their conduct anywhere for the best interest of themselves, their communities, and the state as a whole.
