Speaking at the launch in Katsina, Governor Radda explained that the initiative is a direct response to the economic hardships caused by inflation and high food prices.
“The Rumbun Sauki Initiative is designed to ease the financial strain on families by providing essential food items such as rice, maize, and flour at a 10% subsidy. This is part of our commitment to supporting government workers, pensioners, and vulnerable citizens during these challenging times,” the Governor said.
He emphasised that the government will not remain passive while its citizens struggle, revealing that ₦4 billion has been allocated to ensure the programme’s success.
“To ensure fairness and prevent mismanagement, the initiative will operate under strict guidelines. Beneficiaries including state and local government workers, Local Education Authority staff, and pensioners above 60 can access the subsidised items, but purchases will be limited to one-third of their monthly earnings or pensions.
“This structure ensures fairness, prevents hoarding, and guarantees that as many people as possible benefit,” Governor Radda noted.
Initially, seven distribution centres will be established three in Katsina, two in Daura, and two in Funtua. However, the governor assured that the initiative will expand to all 34 local government areas as implementation progresses.
“This is just the beginning. Our long-term goal is to enhance food security, provide direct support to our people, and ensure that no one is left behind,” he added.
Governor Radda expressed appreciation for the efforts of Engineer Yakubu Nuhu Danja, Special Adviser on Rural Economy, and the Katsina State Executive Council for their role in bringing Rumbun Sauki to life.
Deputy Governor Malam Faruk Lawal Jobe highlighted the broader economic impact of the programme, predicting that it will generate at least ₦30 billion in annual turnover from the initial ₦4 billion investment.
“Beyond providing immediate relief, this initiative will stimulate economic activities, create employment opportunities, and enhance wealth distribution across the state,” he stated.
He further emphasised that Rumbun Sauki will help stabilise market prices by efficiently managing surplus commodities, ultimately improving overall economic conditions.
In his remarks, Special Adviser on Rural Economy Engr Yakubu Nuhu Danja elaborated on the financial options available to beneficiaries.
“Workers and pensioners can either pay upfront for subsidised food items or opt for an interest-free loan, which will be deducted from their salaries at the end of each month.
This ensures accessibility while promoting financial responsibility,” he explained.
Engr Danja also revealed that Governor Radda planned to expand the initiative to include non-formal sector citizens, particularly those above 60, in future phases.
The launch event was attended by key government officials, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura, Members of the State Executive Council, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir, and other senior government officials.
With Rumbun Sauki, the Katsina State Government is taking decisive action to support its citizens in difficult times, ensuring that food remains affordable and within reach for all.
