The assault, captured on a livestream that quickly circulated online, prompted immediate alarm among families and authorities. Local vigilantes attempted to intervene but were overpowered. Church officials confirmed that 38 people, including the assistant pastor’s wife, were abducted.

Rotimi, the assistant pastor and interpreter, recounted how he acted decisively to protect the congregation. He locked members inside the altar and vestry, shielding them from the gunmen. “I didn’t know where to run, so I protected my members first,” he said in an interview with News Central TV.
