Reports indicate that the move to oust Wabara is linked to the ongoing power struggle within the party, primarily between the camp of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and other factions.
Wike, the former governor of Rivers State, is believed to have the upper hand in the battle for control. Although the Abia State chapter of the PDP claimed that Wabara was suspended for allegedly endorsing Labour Party (LP) Governor Alex Otti for a second term, sources within the party insist that this is merely a pretext for his removal.
Speaking on the development, a PDP insider stated, “If you notice, the only time they decided to move against our BoT chair was when the elders of the party insisted that Senator Anyanwu should vacate his position as the National Secretary of the party.
“In their claim, the party in Abia is claiming that his offence was endorsing Governor Otti. When did that happen? How come they are just realising the offence?
“Well, the truth is that, as a party, we are in soup. Unless there is a divine intervention, Senator Wabara is gone. You know, that was how Senator Iyorcha Ayu’s case started as a joke, today, it is history,” the source told Daily Sun.
The PDP has been embroiled in internal strife since the removal of its former National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, following the 2023 presidential election.
The crisis deepened after the party’s 98th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in April 2024, which established a reconciliation committee and planned congresses to resolve disputes.
However, the crucial 99th NEC meeting has faced multiple postponements, leading to further uncertainty.
At the centre of the current dispute is the contest for the position of PDP National Secretary between Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye.
The BoT recently recognized Ude-Okoye as the rightful National Secretary and directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to inaugurate him.
The decision was based on the report of a committee led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, which ruled in favour of Ude-Okoye.
Despite the Court of Appeal upholding Ude-Okoye’s status, Anyanwu has taken the matter to the Supreme Court.
The PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, has warned that disregarding the BoT’s resolution could damage the party, adding that the BoT, as the “conscience of the party,” holds a critical role in maintaining unity.
