Kaizer Chiefs have named Lebo Maboe in their CAF Confederation Cup squad as they prepare to face Simba FC from the Democratic Republic of Congo this weekend. The 31-year-old forward, who joined Amakhosi as a free agent after leaving Mamelodi Sundowns in August, is set to make his debut following a successful recovery from surgery.
Chiefs are aiming to reach the group stages of the continental competition after edging past Kabuscorp of Angola in the previous round via a penalty shoot-out. The Soweto giants will hope Maboe’s return injects creativity into an attack that has struggled to convert chances this season.
During the international break, the club confirmed the departure of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, with assistants Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze taking charge until the end of the campaign. Chiefs have managed just one win in their last five matches across all competitions.
Despite their recent slump, Amakhosi are looking to rediscover the defensive form that saw them keep five clean sheets in their first five Premiership matches. Maboe’s inclusion could provide a timely boost as Chiefs seek momentum on both domestic and continental fronts.
Chiefs’ opponents, Simba FC of Kolwezi, are not to be confused with Tanzania’s Simba SC. The DRC-based side will host the match at the Stade TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi, as their home ground does not meet CAF standards.
