“Oh, I think it’s going to make it more exciting,” Trump said when asked about the impact of strained relations between the three host countries. “Tension is a good thing… it makes it much more exciting.”
During the meeting, Trump signed an executive order establishing a White House task force to oversee preparations for what he called the “largest sporting event in history.”
The president will personally chair the task force, which aims to ensure smooth planning for the 48-team tournament.
Infantino highlighted the economic benefits of the event, stating that the World Cup and this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in the US would generate 200,000 jobs and contribute $40 billion to the economy.
He also emphasised the importance of security and hospitality, thanking Trump for setting up the task force to ensure that “everyone that comes to America feels safe, feels welcome.”
With the 2026 World Cup featuring an expanded format, Infantino likened the scale of the event to hosting three NFL Super Bowls per day for a month.
Trump appeared impressed, stating, “I’ve never heard that expressed.”
