Pretoria: Warm With Late Thundershowers

According to SAWS, Pretoria will begin Saturday with partly cloudy skies and temperatures ranging between 15°C and 29°C. Showers and thundershowers are expected later in the afternoon, with a 30% chance of rain and around 3mm of rainfall anticipated.

Humidity will drop from 70% in the early morning to around 35% by mid-afternoon, before rising slightly in the evening. Winds will shift from east-northeast in the morning to westerly by nightfall.

Sunday will bring slightly warmer conditions, with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 31°C and a 60% chance of rainfall. Light easterly winds and moderate humidity are expected throughout the day.

Johannesburg: Showers and Thunderstorms Through the Weekend

Johannesburg will experience showers and thundershowers across both days, with slightly cooler temperatures than Pretoria. On Saturday, the city will have a minimum of 14°C and a maximum of 25°C, along with a 60% chance of rain and about 5mm of precipitation expected.

Humidity will range from 75% in the morning to 40% in the afternoon, while winds will shift from northerly to west-northwesterly later in the day. On Sunday, temperatures are expected to rise to 28°C, with a 30% chance of rain and moderate northeast winds.

SAWS: No Heatwave, Just Normal Spring Heat

Despite the warm conditions, SAWS meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela clarified that Gauteng is not currently experiencing a heatwave.

“The province is only experiencing hot conditions, but they are within the normal threshold,” Thobela told The Citizen. “Since it is spring, we are still going to see rain. There is no rain when there is a heatwave.”

He explained that a heatwave occurs when maximum temperatures exceed 5°C above the average for at least three consecutive days. Thobela urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid long exposure to direct sunlight, and be cautious with open flames.

More Rain Expected as Summer Approaches

The weather service added that more rainfall is expected in the coming weeks as the province transitions toward summer. The shift is expected to bring relief from the recent hot and dry conditions across Gauteng.
