The announcement was made during the first council meeting of 2025, led by Governor Babagana Zulum. After the meeting, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, emphasized the importance of the renaming.

“The council has approved that Borno State University will now be known as Kashim Ibrahim University, as a tribute to the remarkable contributions of Sir Kashim Ibrahim as the first Governor of Northern Nigeria, and his lasting impact on leadership and governance,” Tar said.

He further explained that the renaming will take effect once necessary legislative changes are made and formal notifications are sent to relevant authorities.

“This decision will undergo legislative approval by the State Assembly to amend the university’s founding law. Additionally, the Ministry of Education will inform the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB),” he added.
