Captain Maxwell Wanda presented his account before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday. He detailed his involvement in the December 2024 raid on Molefe’s residence, an operation connected to the murder investigation of engineer Armand Swart.

Swart was reportedly killed after his company exposed a corrupt Transnet tender. This tender was allegedly linked to a nephew of the crime boss.

Hawks’ Unexpected Intervention Raises Questions

The operation on December 6, 2024, proceeded with the PKTT arresting Molefe and searching his property. The situation shifted dramatically when a large contingent of Hawks officers arrived.

Wanda described the arriving officers as “very aggressive.” He expressed his deep concern over their presence, noting they appeared in unusually high numbers. The Hawks members claimed they believed the PKTT officers were impersonating a legitimate police unit.

The tension escalated further when a helicopter was seen circling Molefe’s house shortly after the Hawks’ arrival. This development added to the confusion and intensity of the already volatile situation.

Disturbing Allegations of Interference

Testimony at the commission has included allegations that former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya authorized the disruptive deployment. The high number of officers involved in the intervention continues to be a point of serious inquiry for the commission.

Captain Wanda’s testimony underscores the operational challenges and potential internal conflicts within law enforcement. The unexpected appearance of so many Hawks members during the arrest of Katiso Molefe remains a pivotal moment in the investigation.
