On August 2, 1997, the world lost legendary Nigerian singer Fela Kuti at the age of 58. Reports indicated that he succumbed to AIDS-related complications in Lagos, Nigeria.
His funeral procession drew an astonishing crowd of approximately one million people. The procession started at Tafawa Balewa Square and concluded at Kuti’s home, Kalakuta, in Ikeja, Nigeria, where he was laid to rest in the front yard.

Fela Kuti was a pioneer of the Afrobeat genre, a unique style of music that was initially unrecognized in Nigeria, Africa, and beyond. His music fiercely criticized oppressive regimes, which led to severe persecution by authorities.
Notable rebellious songs include “Zombie,” which condemned Nigerian soldiers for blindly following despotic rulers’ orders, and “V.I.P. (Vagabonds in Power),” which encouraged the oppressed to rise against the government. Despite being arrested 200 times and enduring numerous beatings, Kuti continued to produce political lyrics and released 50 albums before his death.
Today, the Afrobeats genre Fela pioneered has gained immense popularity, with Nigerian Afrobeats artists achieving global fame and winning numerous awards. The genre’s international recognition has seen artists from various countries embracing it.
Fela’s legacy continues to be celebrated, especially as his songs about oppressive Nigerian leaders still resonate today. His music remains popular among fans who visit the New Africa Shrine, also known as Fela Shrine, in Ikeja. An annual event called “Felabration” celebrates Fela’s legacy, drawing massive crowds from across the nation.

In a post shared on his Instagram page, the bereaved comedian said Zion was supposed to be due for birth in October this year but had to be born on July 2, 26 weeks earlier.
The content creator said he and his wife went ahead with the baby shower they had planned on July 27. However, the next day, their baby boy who was in intensive care had a bacterial infection and sadly, passed away afterwards.

‘’Zion Ayomikun Blue Olatunde …you were due in October, but you just couldn’t wait to meet mommy and daddy so you came super early at 26 weeks on July 2nd.
You were doing pretty well for a 26 weeker, so we decided to still proceed with your baby shower on July 27th as previously scheduled even before you came.
Then came July 28th when we got a call that you had gotten a bacterial infection…and from there it was one thing after another after another, which all happened so quickly back to back over the next few days.
Despite the words of the doctors, we were still very hopeful and optimistic that you’ll pull through, especially considering how long and hard you kept fighting which even blew the doctors’ minds. we prayed and prayed. But God decided to call you home during the early hours of August 1st with mommy and daddy right by your side.
I’ve never experienced this kind of pain before, but it’s crazy how despite the amount of pain you’re in, life still has to go on…literally right after. How quickly we went from plans of you coming home, to now talking to funeral homes. Hey God

Ask yourself what it is that appeals to you about each decision. Is it a new job that has you struggling? Think about your current position and what the benefits are. Now, think about the new position. What does it feel to be in that new space? Do you feel lighter? Happier? If so, then the decision should be clear!
Don’t Choose Something Because You Think You Have To
This goes back to creativity. When it comes to making hard decisions, the options are never black and white. There are always shades of grey. Once you’ve undoubtedly figured out your desires, you will have to stay on that path! Don’t let the voices of others (or those in your head) get to you. It’s those deceptive voices that breed indecisiveness. If you want a better paying job in a different city, you can’t let the struggle of finding a place to live hinder an incredible opportunity. Avoid placing unnecessary pressure on yourself to find a place right away. Reach out to any possible contacts that you may have in that city. Trust me, you’ll be surprised at how people show up for you!
Doing Something Is Always Better Than Not Doing Anything At All
Being fearful of a decision should never halt your growth. Moving forward is the only way we can ever genuinely grow as human beings. While you may have a steady job, it doesn’t hurt to pursue something that offers you more money and more room to grow. Clearly, it’s safer to stay at a job that pays the bills and is fulfilling. But what about being able to work for larger companies, be more creative, get more money, and live in a brand new city? If any of that sounds interesting, then it’s time to get out of your comfort zone. Take that bold leap of faith and go for your dreams. You never know what might come your way. Again, this isn’t to necessarily say that your dreams will come true overnight. On the contrary, life has a funny way of giving us life lessons at the perfect time.

It’s hard. I am notorious for being indecisive. But that doesn’t mean that I avoid decisions., I practice being decisive when I have the opportunity. Building this decision muscle is hard, but it definitely pays off in the end.
As humans, we make mistakes. This means we make wrong decisions just as much as we make the right ones. But I have found that placing my trust in the universe is the only way to keep me sane. Ekene Adams
Barely two weeks ago, the House of Representatives had lost member representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams.
He had reportedly battled ill-health in the months leading to his death.
According to a statement by the House Spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr, Adams died early Tuesday, July 16, at the age of 39.
“The House of Representatives is saddened to announce the passing of a dear member of the 10th Assembly, Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams (LP, Kaduna), who died early Tuesday, at the age of 39.
“Rep. Adams was a dedicated public servant, passionate sports administrator, and kind philanthropist who, until his demise, chaired the House Committee on Sports. He was a first-term member of the House of Representatives, representing the good people of Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State.
“The dear departed lawmaker was a kind and gentle humanitarian, loved by all who knew him. His dedication to the development of grassroots sports in Nigeria was unwavering, and his contributions to the House will be deeply missed,” the statement read.
A former football player, Adams had served as the general manager of Nigeria Premier Football League side Remo Stars as well as Kada City before he won a seat in the House of Representatives during the 2023 general elections.
His sports background earned him the role of the reps committee chairman on sports despite being a first-timer in the green chamber.
Olaide Akinremi
About a week before Adams’ death, the House of Representatives had lost member representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency of Oyo State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rep. Olaide Adewale Akinremi.
Akinremi’s death was announced in a statement on Wednesday, July 10, by the House Spokesperson, Rotimi Jr.
He said the lawmaker died after a brief illness, aged 51.
The statement described the late Akinremi as a distinguished and ranking member of the 10th Assembly.
He served as Chairman of the House Committee on Science Research Institutions.
“Until his demise, the Oyo legislator was a dedicated public servant known for his unwavering commitment to the development of his constituency and the country at large.
“His passion for service, coupled with his deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of his people, earned him the endearing title of ‘Jagaban,” the statement added.
Isa Dogonyaro
On May 10, 2024, member representing Garki/Babura federal Constituency of Jigawa State, Rep. Isa Dogonyaro, passed away.
One of his colleagues, Mohammed Bello El-Rufa’i announced the death of the lawmaker on his Facebook wall Friday morning.
He wrote, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. Earlier today, we lost colleague in the House of Representatives, a brilliant parliamentarian and an overall good man. May Allah SWT forgive him and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus”.
Speaking to Daily Trust on telephone, the Deputy House Spokesperson, Phillip Agbese, said he learnt about the death of the lawmaker through posts on social media and on WhatsApp groups of the House of Representatives.
He said, “There are the usual Islamic prayers and tributes by colleagues on various platforms. There is no official communication to the House yet. The family has not communicated to the House.
“That is the tradition. It is when the family communicates through the Speaker that we will officially announce his death. I learnt that the funeral prayer is scheduled in Abuja this afternoon”.
Dogonyaro was declared the lawful APC candidate for the House of Representatives in the 2023 general election after a court sacked Aminu Kanta who was declared the winner of the primary election in the constituency.
The deceased had challenged Kanta’s victory on the grounds of allegedly submitting a false name.
Abdulkadir Danbuga
On October 11, 2023 the member, representing Isa-Sabon Birni federal constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdulkadir Jelani Danbuga, died.
Dambuga’s colleague and member, representing Sabon Birni South constituency at the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Aminu Almustapha (aka Boza), had confirmed death to Daily Trust.
According to Boza, Dambuga died after a brief illness.
He was said to have been admitted in the hospital around Tuesday noon.
“His remains would be taken to the National Mosque for the bathing ritual after which it would be flown to Sokoto for burial around 11am,” Boza said.
Danbuga is survived by two wives, many children and grandchildren.

About two months after he won the seat to represent Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency in Taraba State, Ismaila Maihanci, passed on. He died on April 22, 2023 at the age of 36.
Maihanci had won the election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Orphaned at the tender age of 10, the young girl was taken in by an uncle, George, who introduced her to the pastor. The pastor, who had recently separated from his wife, promised to care for her and provide education. Instead, he began a six-year reign of terror, subjecting her to sexual violations and forcing her to undergo four abortions without her consent.
The victim recalls being given drugs to make her sexually active” and losing memory after taking them. She reported the abuse to church leaders and teachers, but was silenced and ignored. The pastor’s grip on her was so strong that she felt trapped and alone.
“I was just a child when it started, ” she said, her voice trembling. “I didn’t know what was happening. He would give me drugs and then… and then he would do things to me.”
The victim’s ordeal began in the pastor’s three-bedroom flat at 6, Dolamo Street, Agodo- Egbe, where she was forced to live with him. She was made to believe that she was lucky to have a roof over her head and food on the table.
“He told me that I was lucky to have him in my life,” she said. ” That he was doing me a favor by taking care of me.” But the favor came with a steep price. The pastor’s sexual demands increased over time, and the victim was forced to undergo multiple abortions to cover up his crimes.
“The first time I got pregnant, I was so scared, she said. “I didn’t know what to do. He took me to a doctor who aborted the pregnancy. I was just 12 years old.”
The victim’s story is a heart-wrenching account of manipulation, coercion, and abuse. She was made to feel guilty for the pastor’s actions, and was told that she would be thrown out of the house if she didn’t comply.
“I felt so alone,” she said. “I didn’t know who to turn to. I thought that I was the only one who was suffering.”
But the victim’s luck changed when she slumped and started bleeding from her private part while heading to school. Sympathizers rushed her to a hospital along Isolo- Mushin Road, finally revealing the extent of the abuse.
The hospital bed she laid on was soaked with blood, and the attention of a church member, who is also a family friend of her guardian, was invited. When the result of the scan came out, it revealed that the abortion was not properly done.
The pastor, known as Daddy” to the victim, has been arrested, and police investigations are ongoing. The victim is currently receiving medical attention and counseling to help her overcome her ordeal.
This horrific case highlights the dark underbelly of sexual abuse and exploitation in Nigeria, where victims often suffer in silence. It is a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and support for those who have suffered at the hands of abusers.
The victim’s story is a testament to the strength and resilience of survivors of sexual abuse. Despite the trauma she has endured, she is determined to rebuild her life and seek justice.
“I want him to pay for what he did to me,” she said, her voice firm. ” I want him to rot in jail.”
As the young girl begins her journey towards healing and justice, her story serves as a call to action for all of us to stand up against sexual abuse and exploitation. We must create a society where victims feel safe to speak out and where perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
