The President made this statement on Thursday while attending the official launch of former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida’ s autobiography. Tinubu’ s remarks came in response to the US policy shift under President Donald Trump, who, immediately after his inauguration, announced a 90- day freeze on all US foreign assistance, including over $40 billion in funding for international projects through USAID.
Trump stated that the pause was necessary to review the agency’ s alignment with his ” America- First” agenda. Speaking at the event, Tinubu emphasised that the developments in America and Europe should serve as a wake- up call for Africa, particularly Nigeria.
” I’ m glad about what is happening in America and Europe; the contradiction that we are seeing now all over. What is it telling us? It’ s telling us to wake up, to make Africa a better place, particularly this country, Nigeria, ” he said.
The President pointed out that revelations surrounding international aid, including concerns over terror financing, should serve as a catalyst for the continent to take responsibility for its own growth and security.
Tinubu noted that the era of relying on foreign aid was coming to an end and urged African leaders to prioritise sustainable economic policies. He stated that Nigeria must focus on strengthening its own institutions, economy, and infrastructure rather than depending on external assistance.
At the gathering, Tinubu also acknowledged the leadership present, stating that the same ” revolutionary courage” that once united them must now drive them to take decisive action in nation- building.
” We find our leaders here, the situation that brought us together, and the one that we’ ll continue from this moment on, the revolutionary courage that brought leadership out to build our country, ” he remarked.
Expressing gratitude to the Nigerian people, he commended their patience and perseverance, acknowledging the weight of responsibility on his administration.
