A Milestone for Nigerian English

Kingsley Ugwuanyi, a Nigerian English consultant for the OED, announced the update on LinkedIn, expressing pride in his contributions. Ugwuanyi played a significant role in drafting the definitions and recording the pronunciations.

He shared, “I’m delighted to announce that the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has officially published its latest update, featuring a fantastic collection of Nigerian English words that beautifully represent our culture, creativity, and unique expressions as Nigerians. • Japa: Defined as “the emigration of Nigerians to other countries, particularly in Europe or North America, in search of education, jobs, or economic opportunities.”
• Agbero: Described as “a tout, often found at car parks or bus stops, collecting money from passengers and drivers while helping passengers board vehicles.”
• 419: Refers to “fraud, typically online, involving requests for advance payment in exchange for a share of a large sum of money that never materializes.”
