Reflecting on the tragedy, Kanu detailed how his parents, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu and Lolo Ugoeze Sally Nmeme Okwu Kanu, suffered immense psychological distress following the violent attack, which ultimately led to their untimely deaths.
During a recent meeting with his legal team at the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facility in Abuja, Kanu recounted the traumatic events that unfolded when the Nigerian Army launched an offensive under Operation Python Dance.
According to him, the raid was not only an attempt on his life but also a targeted assault on his family, resulting in long- lasting emotional wounds that his parents could never recover from.
The 2017 Military Invasion And Kanu’ s Escape
On September 14, 2017, armed soldiers stormed Kanu’ s residence in what he describes as an unprovoked act of aggression. The operation, which led to the deaths of at least 28 individuals, was carried out under the guise of quelling IPOB activities. However, Kanu believes the primary goal was to eliminate him.
Amid the chaos, Kanu narrowly escaped the attack and was forced into hiding before eventually seeking refuge in Europe. His sudden disappearance and the ferocity of the assault left his elderly parents deeply traumatized.
The emotional burden of witnessing the destruction of their home and the mass killing of supporters took a significant toll on their health, leading to their gradual decline.

” The real criminals are those who ordered the killings in my village, yet they continue to enjoy power while innocent people suffer. This injustice cannot stand forever, ” he declared.
With tensions still high in the Southeast and IPOB remaining a focal point of government crackdowns, Kanu’ s continued detention is seen as a symbol of the larger political struggle between the Nigerian state and pro- Biafra agitators.
Whether his calls for justice will be heeded remains uncertain, but one thing is clear— Nnamdi Kanu has vowed never to let the memory of his late parents and fallen comrades fade into obscurity.
