The threat comes after Abati’ s appearance on Thursday’ s episode of Arise TV, where he peddled a long- debunked conspiracy theory regarding land ownership in the South- East region of Nigeria. In a segment discussing the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’ s entrepreneurial legacy, Abati alleged that no Yoruba Nigerian could purchase land in Igboland. He claimed that the Igbo people, despite their industriousness, refuse to sell land to non- Igbos, suggesting an inherent hostility towards other tribes.
Abati’ s comments were particularly incendiary as they followed a tribute to the late Ubah, an Igbo politician. The media commentator quickly inserted his views, recounting a story from T. O. S. Benson, a former Nigerian minister, who supposedly faced difficulties buying land in the South- East despite being married to an Igbo woman. According to Abati, this situation highlighted the Igbo people’ s supposed reluctance to share land with outsiders.

” The irony of Nigeria is that the same Igbos who are so industrious and successful in other parts of the country, won’ t allow non- Igbos to buy land in their region, even if you’ re an in- law, ” Abati remarked.
However, Abati’ s claims were quickly debunked. Numerous sources confirmed that Nigerians of Yoruba origin, including notable figures like businessman Adetayo Amusan, own land and properties in the South- East.
For instance, Amusan is the owner of the Polo Mall in Enugu, while prominent businessman Mike Adenuga, a non- Igbo, holds significant land assets across Abia State. In addition, Nigerian Yoruba citizens are known to live in commercial hubs across the South- East, including cities like Aba and Enugu.
Despite the glaring contradictions to his statements, Abati remained unrepentant when questioned by his colleague, Ojy Okpe, during Friday’ s broadcast. Okpe attempted to challenge Abati’ s assertions by reading out a comment from social media urging him to reconsider his sweeping generalisations about the Igbo people. Abati, however, remained defiant, repeatedly shouting, ” Replay the tape! ” as he argued that his words were accurate and not open to interpretation.
” I was specific about what I said. Nobody should tell me any nonsense, ” he insisted, refusing to back down from his position. Abati’ s combative response sparked outrage online, with viewers questioning his disrespectful treatment of his colleague, Ms Okpe, and expressing concern about his behaviour both on and off air.

Despite the controversy surrounding his remarks, Abati’ s stance remained firm, with him stating that it was not his responsibility to retract his words in light of evidence contradicting his claims. His unyielding attitude added fuel to the growing fire of public anger, with many accusing him of deliberately misrepresenting the Igbo people to further his narrative.
