Justice Maryann Anenih of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has set December 10, 2024, to deliver her ruling on the bail applications of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, and two co- defendants.....Read Full Article>>

The decision was announced after the court heard arguments from Joseph Bodunde Daudu, SAN, representing Bello, and Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Daudu, in his submission, urged the court to grant his client bail, emphasizing that the law presumes Bello innocent until proven otherwise. He argued that the former governor poses no flight risk, noting that he has not left the country in seven years.

Daudu also assured the court that Bello would not interfere with witnesses or evidence, as the EFCC has already concluded its investigation and filed charges.

Conversely, EFCC counsel Pinheiro opposed the bail application, expressing concerns that Bello might interfere with witnesses and tamper with evidence if released. Pinheiro urged the court to deny the request to protect the integrity of the ongoing judicial process.

After hearing the submissions, Justice Anenih adjourned the matter to December 10 for her ruling. She ordered that Bello and the other defendants remain in EFCC custody until then.

The two co- defendants, Umar Shoaib Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, had previously been granted administrative bail by the EFCC. However, Bello made his first court appearance during this proceeding.

The charges against the former governor and his co- defendants have drawn significant public attention, with the EFCC alleging financial misconduct during Bello’ s tenure as governor of Kogi State.
