During an interview with TVC News, Kalu explained that none of the proposals had satisfied the conditions outlined in Section 8, Subsections 1, 2, and 3 of the Nigerian Constitution.

According to Kalu, the House Committee on Constitution Review, which is responsible for evaluating these requests, has received applications through member bills and memoranda. However, he pointed out that the proposals did not align with the legal framework necessary for state creation.

” We want the public to understand that while we have received multiple applications for state creation, not all of them meet the required standards, ” he stated.
He emphasized that the process of creating a new state is strictly guided by constitutional provisions. This includes obtaining the approval of a two- thirds majority in the Senate, House of Representatives, State Houses of Assembly, and local government councils.

” As of now, none of the 31 applications meet the requirements of Section 8. That is why we are informing Nigerians that these applications are ineffective in their current form, ” he added.
Kalu urged applicants to rectify these deficiencies, giving them until March 5 to comply with the constitutional guidelines. He reiterated that there is no alternative to adhering to the legal process and encouraged those seeking state creation to resubmit their applications after making the necessary adjustments.

The Constitution is supreme and must be followed. If it specifies a particular process for state creation, we must adhere to it in accordance with the rule of law, ” Kalu emphasized.
