The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has dismissed allegations of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the allegation as baseless. In the past two weeks, media reports and social media platforms have been awash with rumors suggesting that Governor Oborevwori has been meeting with key associates of President Tinubu. The alleged meetings are said to be part of plans to ease his transition to the APC as a strategy to safeguard his governorship position ahead of the 2027 general elections. These rumors were fueled further by PDP’s poor showing in the recent Edo and Ondo State gubernatorial elections.

Concerned PDP Leaders Urge Oborevwori To Clarify Allegations

Amid the anxiety caused by these speculations and the governor’s silence, a group of party stakeholders under the banner Concerned Leaders of PDP has called on Governor Oborevwori to provide a definitive response to the allegations.

In a statement signed by three members—Theophilus Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi—the group expressed its concern over the alleged plans and demanded prompt clarification.

“The rumor mills are agog with stories of your intention to cross over to the ruling APC. There are claims that you have been secretly engaging with top aides of President Tinubu, including the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Femi Gbajabiamila, and Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to facilitate a meeting with the President on this matter,” the statement read.

They added: “Your recent private yuletide meeting with the aforementioned presidential aides and others in Lagos, moments after the general meeting of the state governors with the President, has left many of us feeling betrayed and confused.

“We urge you to come clean about your intentions and provide us with reassurance regarding our future in the PDP. A delayed response could be interpreted as confirmation of the allegations.”

The PDP leaders, in their statement, expressed further frustration: “The rumor mills are rife with reports that Your Excellency has been secretly aligning with top APC leaders. This development is troubling and could destabilize the PDP in Delta State.

“We demand that you immediately clarify your position and reassure members of the party regarding your loyalty to the PDP. Your delayed silence on these matters is worrisome and leaves room for speculation.”

PDP Denies Defection Allegations, Reaffirms Governor’s Loyalty

In a swift response, the Delta State chapter of the PDP dismissed the allegations as baseless and mischievous, asserting that Governor Oborevwori remains firmly committed to the PDP.

In a press statement signed by the State Chairman, Chief Solomon Arenyeka, JP, the PDP described the accusations as the work of “faceless impostors” who do not represent the party.

“The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party, Delta State chapter, has been drawn to mischievous, sinister, and baseless speculations, especially on social media, alleging that His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, plans to defect to the APC.

“We view these unfounded reports as the handiwork of failed agents of destabilization and treachery. The faceless group behind these rumors does not represent our great party.

“We strongly condemn the vile propaganda being circulated by these depraved individuals, particularly a notorious serial blackmailer and dishonest scoundrel who thrives on concocting lies for personal survival,” Arenyeka stated.

He reaffirmed that Governor Oborevwori remains committed to delivering good governance through his M.O.R.E. agenda, which focuses on social infrastructure and human capital development across Delta State.

Governor’s Whereabouts Unconfirmed

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the governor’s office addressing his rumored trip to Ghana. Similarly, there has been no formal denial of claims that he met with President Tinubu to discuss defection plans.

The PDP leadership has urged party members and the general public to disregard the speculations and continue supporting the governor’s developmental agenda for Delta State.
