Andrey Kaprin, the General Director of the Radiology Medical Research Centre under the Russian Ministry of Health, shared that the country has created its own mRNA vaccine to combat cancer.
According to Russia’ s TASS news agency, this vaccine will be available to patients without charge. The vaccine is anticipated to be available for general use in early 2025. Alexander Gintsburg, the Director of the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, conveyed to TASS that pre- clinical trials have indicated the vaccine’ s ability to inhibit tumor growth and reduce the risk of metastasis.
In previous statements, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that scientists are nearing the development of vaccines targeting cancer, suggesting that patients may soon have access to these groundbreaking treatments. He remarked in a televised address in February that they are close to realizing a new generation of cancer vaccines and immunomodulatory drugs.
Details regarding which specific cancers the vaccine will target or its official name have yet to be disclosed. Other nations are also pursuing similar endeavors; for instance, the British government has partnered with the German company BioNTech to create personalized cancer therapies, as reported by Newsweek.
Regarding the incorporation of AI in cancer vaccine development, Gintsburg mentioned that artificial neural networks could significantly reduce the time required to design a personalized vaccine to less than an hour.
He explained that the current process is lengthy due to the complex calculations involved in determining the structure of a customized mRNA vaccine. The Ivannikov Institute is set to utilize AI, specifically neural network computing, to expedite this mathematical process, aiming for a time frame of approximately 30 minutes to one hour.
Additionally, pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck & Co are working on an experimental cancer vaccine, which has shown promise in a mid- stage trial by halving the risk of recurrence or death from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, after three years of treatment.
