Some Nigerian personalities, including pro-democracy advocate Omoyele Sowore, #BringBackOurGirls co-founder Aisha Yesufu, and prominent theatre practitioners, scholars, and artists, will participate as panellists and speakers at the 2024 Centre for Socially Engaged Theatre’s (C-SET) Festival of Arts and Discourse.
Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director of the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre and a vocal advocate for responsible policing, is also among the lineup of Nigerian speakers.
Located within the University of Regina’s Faculty of Media, Arts and Performance in Saskatchewan, Canada, the C-SET is set to host the notable event.
According to Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, C-SET’s Director and Canada Research Chair in Socially Engaged Theatre, the event will feature and celebrate diverse projects focused on policing, highlighting the centre’s commitment to socially engaged theatre and interdisciplinary artistic scholarship.
The C-SET is hosting the five-day research showcase from November 25-29, 2024. This free event, part of the Canada Research Chair in Socially Engaged Theatre programme, will feature exhibitions, talks, debates, and panel discussions on policing, justice, and socially engaged theatre practices.
According to Afolabi, the event will highlight several projects focused on policing, including: “Staging Justice: People, Places, Planet, and Practice,” a project echoing the theme of the CATR/ACRT 2024 conference, research presentations by the centre’s graduate students, a display of the play “Past Shadows, Present Shades,” which reflects on migrants’ experiences and imagines new futures.
Additionally, the event will feature an exhibition of protest artworks depicting policing in three countries. These artworks, provoked by protests against police brutality, are intended for educational purposes and have been made publicly accessible by the artists.
The upcoming event will delve into four core thematic areas: activism, policy, artivism, and policing in Canada. Scheduled to take place from Monday, November 25 to Friday, November 29, the event times are as follows: Monday, November 25: 11:00am – 1:00pm (Saskatchewan time); Tuesday, November 26: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (Saskatchewan time); Wednesday, November 27: 11:00am – 1:00pm (Saskatchewan time); Thursday, November 28: 11:00am – 1:00pm (Saskatchewan time) and Friday, November 29: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (Saskatchewan time).
This hybrid event will bring together esteemed stakeholders, including experts in policing, activists, academics, and journalists from Canada and beyond.
