Oyerinde emphasized that the state governments have received sufficient support from the Federal Government to be able to pay the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage, which was signed into law in July 2024.
After President Bola Tinubu signed the bill, many state governments committed to enacting the wage increase, although some raised concerns about their financial capabilities.
In an appearance on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ on January 7, 2025, Oyerinde dismissed claims that some states may lack the funds to implement the wage increase, affirming that the new wage structure is now a permanent feature.
He further asserted that financial constraints should not be an excuse for any state, as the Federal Government has increased their allocations.
“The allocations to state governments have increased accordingly. With a little fiscal discipline, no state should claim it cannot pay the N70,000 as approved by the President,” Oyerinde stated.
He also warned that if state governors refuse to pay the new minimum wage, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) would alter their approach to ensure the wage is paid.
