Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed the deaths of the two men, aged 27 and 30. The operation was launched to locate a suspect wanted for a hijacking that occurred in Harding on Friday, 19 September. In that incident, five armed men hijacked a van.
One suspect was previously arrested for the hijacking, prompting the search for his accomplices. Authorities received intelligence indicating one of the outstanding suspects was hiding within the Glebelands Hostel.
Police Operation Elicits Hostile Response
An operation was swiftly planned, and officers moved on the hostel on Monday, 20 October. Upon arriving at the targeted room, the police announced their presence.
The occupants responded by opening fire on the officers. A gun battle ensued between the police and the suspects inside the room.
When the shooting stopped, two suspects lay fatally wounded. Police secured the scene and discovered two unlicensed firearms along with six rounds of ammunition. Lieutenant Colonel Magwaza stated that police investigations into the matter are continuing.
Westbury Mass Shooting Prompts Official Response
In a separate incident, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety is demanding urgent action following a mass shooting in Westbury, Sophiatown. The attack on Tuesday claimed the lives of two teenagers.
Police reports indicate that six teenagers, aged between 14 and 19, were gunned down in what is believed to be a gang-related attack. Two victims were declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. The four other victims are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.
Preliminary information suggests the teenagers were targeted by three suspects from a rival gang. The Provincial Anti-Gang Unit and SAPS Forensic Services have processed the crime scene. District Crime Intelligence units are assisting in the effort to track down the gunmen.
