‘Success Must Be Earned Honestly’

Speaking at the annual NSC Pledge Signing Ceremony at Harry Gwala High School in Khayelitsha on Friday, Gwarube reminded learners that the pledge represents more than just a commitment to avoid cheating — it is a declaration of ethical citizenship.

“When you put your name on that pledge, you are saying your success will be earned through your own effort, not through shortcuts or deceit,” she said.

The minister warned that dishonesty and cheating not only tarnish individual reputations but also threaten the credibility of the entire education system. “If we allow cheating to take root, we harm the value of the certificate that thousands of honest learners have worked hard to achieve,” she added.

Protecting the Credibility of the NSC

Gwarube reaffirmed the Department of Basic Education’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the NSC exams, which serve as a key pathway to universities, colleges, and employment opportunities.

“These results open doors to the future. They must reflect effort, discipline, and fairness,” she said, urging learners to act as role models of integrity for their peers and communities.

Building a Principled Generation

The minister said South Africa’s education system must produce young people who are not only academically capable but also ethical and socially responsible.

“We want to raise a generation that understands integrity and excellence can and must go hand in hand. Your honesty will sustain your success; your integrity will define your legacy,” she said.
