Mokoena reached this significant milestone during South Africa’s commanding 3–1 win over Zambia. The match took place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium this past Saturday. His former mentor sees this achievement as just one step in a much longer journey.

He emphasized that the 27-year-old must maintain his current trajectory. “He still has a long way to go,” the coach stated. “He needs to work hard and remain humble. Staying focused is crucial, and everything will fall into place.”

The coach expressed a strong belief in the player’s European potential. He confirmed that a move abroad remains a clear objective. “I’m thinking the boy is still looking forward to going overseas. That’s everyone’s dream,” he said. He wishes for Mokoena to test his skills internationally.

The coach vividly recalls the moment he knew Teboho was special. “I was sitting right behind their bench; he was their captain,” he remembered. “I was impressed with the way he was applying himself as a youngster.”

He noted how the young player commanded his coach’s attention. “For about eight minutes at half-time, their coach was only talking to Teboho. I thought there was something about this boy.” This observation made him follow the teenager’s progress throughout the entire tournament.

The Disciplined Foundation of a Future Star

Beyond his football skills, his disciplined character set him apart. “You could tell that the boy had discipline,” the coach reflected. “As much as he was playing with his peers, he was different.” This foundational attitude has been central to his professional development.

Describing his personality, the coach said Mokoena was a quiet and focused individual. “He was very quiet and not somebody that talked too much, but he was always laughing.” His dedication was evident in his habits, often prioritizing rest and homework.

This commitment sometimes meant he was missed at training sessions. “You could start a training session without realising that he was not there,” the coach said. “You’d find he was at his room, not out of disrespect, but because he was resting or doing his homework.”

That early discipline and clear ambition to become a professional are now paying off. With 50 caps for Bafana Bafana and a key role at Sundowns, the platform is set. His former coach’s belief that a move abroad is the next logical step seems more plausible than ever.
