BREAKING: Dangote to Sell Refinery to NNPC Amid Disputes with Government
![](https://spazr.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Screenshot-2024-07-21-at-21-42-56-Dangote-Offers-to-Sell-Refinery-to-NNPC-Amid-Disputes-with-Government-operanewsapp.png)
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is willing to sell his multi-billion-dollar oil refinery to NNPC Limited, Nigeria’s state-owned energy company, amid unresolved differences with the federal government....Read More
The 650,000 barrel-per-day refinery, which began operations last year after a decade of construction, has been facing challenges, including difficulties in sourcing crude oil from international producers.
NNPC, which has a supply deal with the refinery, has only delivered 6.9 million barrels of oil since last year, forcing the refinery to seek alternative sources from countries like Brazil and the US.
Dangote has expressed frustration with the obstacles his refinery is facing, stating that he is ready to let go of the project if it will benefit the country.
“Let them (NNPCL) buy me out and run the refinery the best way they can. They have labelled me a monopolist. That’s an incorrect and unfair allegation, but it’s OK. If they buy me out, at least, their so-called monopolist would be out of the way,” Dangote said in a recent interview.
The interview was granted on Sunday to Premium Times.
Dangote, who has long dominated Nigeria’s cement, salt, and sugar industries, ventured into oil and gas, a move that has proven challenging.
The refinery cost $19 billion to build, more than double the initial estimate. It promises to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel and save up to 30% of the foreign exchange spent on imports.
It is understood that the refinery, set to release its first batch of petrol to the Nigerian market in August, has been operating at just over half its capacity due to difficulties in sourcing crude oil from international producers.
“As you probably know, I am 67 years old. In less than three years, I will be 70. I need very little to live the rest of my life. I can’t take the refinery or any other property or asset to my grave. Everything I do is in the interest of my country,” Dangote said.
“This refinery can help resolve the problem, but it seems some people are uncomfortable with me in the picture. So I am ready to let go, let the NNPC buy me out and run the refinery. At least the country will have high-quality products and create jobs,” he added.
Dangote’s decision comes after facing several obstacles, which he believes validate the caution advised by friends and associates when he invested billions into Nigeria’s economy.
“Four years ago, one of my very wealthy friends began to invest his money abroad. I disagreed with him and urged him to rethink his action in the interest of his country. He blamed his action on policy inconsistencies and interest groups. That friend has been taunting me in the past few days, saying he warned me and that he has been proven right,” Dangote said.
Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Group, recently alleged that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) is permitting the importation of substandard fuel into the country. In response, NMDPRA’s CEO, Farouk Ahmed, countered that diesel produced by Dangote’s refinery and other similar facilities, such as Waltersmith and Aradel, contains high levels of sulfur, potentially damaging vehicle engines and the environment.
However, during a recent tour of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Dangote Fertiliser Limited complex by members of the House of Representatives, Aliko Dangote disputed the regulator’s claims. Lab tests conducted during the tour revealed that Dangote’s diesel contains a mere 87.6 ppm of sulfur, significantly lower than the 1800 ppm and 2000 ppm found in imported samples. Dangote challenged the regulator to conduct an impartial comparison of the quality of his refinery’s products versus imported ones, advocating for a fair assessment to determine the best interests of Nigeria.
Also during the tour, Dangote announced that he would halt his investment in Nigeria’s steel industry to avoid accusations of monopoly. ...Read More

![](https://spazr.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/NDLEA-Seizes-Cocaine-Loud-Consignments-Hidden-In-Incense-Candles-Ladies.jpg)
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed that its operatives intercepted attempts by drug syndicates to smuggle Cocaine and Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, disguised in incense candles, game packs, dry hibiscus leaves, and traditional women’s attire through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) and several courier firms in Lagos.
NDLEA said the development followed the seizure of the illicit shipments and arrests of suspects linked to them.
NDLEA, in a statement by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy, on Sunday, announced that a businessman, Abdulwahab Owolabi Alebiosu was on Thursday arrested at his Horizon Court, Lekki, Lagos residence after a consignment of 40 parcels of Loud weighing 20.30 kilograms hidden in packs of chessboards, scrabbles, checkers, and poker set, brought in from Canada on a British Airways flight was intercepted at the SAHCO import shed of the Lagos airport during a joint examination of the cargo with men of Customs Service.
Babafemi disclosed that a search of the suspect’s home also led to the recovery of more exhibits including some drug paraphernalia, such as, weighing scale, and cannabis potency test kit, while four vaping machines were recovered from his business premises on Admiralty Way, Lekki.
He also said that a Mikano black truck with registration number FST 657 HP was also recovered from his house.
According to the statement, NDLEA operatives, in the same vein, at the NAHCO export shed of the MMIA on Friday 19th July intercepted two jumbo bags going to Pakistan.
Babafemi said the bags contained dried hibiscus leaves, dried bitter leaves and other food items, which were used to conceal four parcels of cocaine and 14 parcels of Loud, both weighing 1.360kg.
He stated that further investigations led to the arrest of a businesswoman, Eze Queen Ogechi who claimed she was sending the illicit consignment to Pakistan on the instruction of her brother, Eze Nnamdi Promise based in the South Asia country.
Also at the Lagos airport, Babafemi said NDLEA operatives attached to Terminal II, Departure Gate of the MMIA, on Thursday 18th July intercepted a male Beninese passenger, Orobi Adoubi Amen, travelling with a bag containing some female native dresses.
He explained that the suspect was going to Dubai via Accra, Ghana on an Air Peace Airline flight and a connecting flight to Dubai, UAE on Emirates Airline. A thorough search of the bag revealed eight parcels of Loud weighing 2.10kg were concealed in the ladies’ native wears. The suspect claimed he was given the consignment for a fee of N600,000 on successful delivery in Dubai.
Announcing other interceptions and seizures by the Agency, Babafemi said: “Not less than 4.5kg of the same substance concealed inside the door panels and boot of an imported Toyota RAV 4 vehicle was on Sunday 14th July recovered from a container marked MSDU 5656394 from Canada during a 100% search of the container at Tincan port in Lagos. Two suspects: Dada Kole and Alaba Oladewusi have been arrested in connection with the seizure.
“Meanwhile, a 48-year-old one legged man, Amadu Garba was arrested by NDLEA operatives in his house at Yawuri town, Kebbi State with six bags of cannabis weighing 67kg on Tuesday 16th July.”
He continued: “In Abuja, two suspects: 60-year-old Ademola Elusakin and 34-year-old Nuhu Friday Adamu were arrested by NDLEA operatives on Monday 15th July with 30.0kg of the same psychoactive substance along Kwali-Gwagwalada-Abuja expressway on their way from Lagos to Nasarawa state. Elusakin claimed he procured the consignment from Ghana via Lagos with Keffi, Nasarawa state as his final destination, where they were to supply illegal miners operating in the area.
“At least, 305 blocks of cannabis weighing 152.5kg were recovered from a suspect, Sale Bukar, 39, who was arrested at Geidam in Yobe state on Sunday 14th July while taking the illicit consignment to Diffa, in Niger Republic. While a suspect: Aham Regal Chinemeze, 43, was nabbed on Thursday 18th July with 60kg of same substance along Owerri – Onitsha expressway, Imo state, Adamu Abdullahi, 24, was arrested with 40.500kg on Wednesday 17th July along Obajana -Kabba expressway, Kogi state. The consignment was recovered from him in a commercial bus coming from Lagos enroute Kano.
“In Plateau state, a raid on the storehouse of a notorious drug dealer, Choji Gyang (aka Pararam) who is currently at large, at Rukuba road, Jos led to the recovery of 34 bags of cannabis weighing 312kg while his manager, Kelvin Onwutalu, 43, was arrested. Two suspects: Ifabiyi Johnson, 27, and Adeleke Musiliu, 54, were on Friday 19th July arrested with different strains of cannabis sativa weighing 30.4kg during a raid in Osogbo, Osun state.
“In Jigawa state, the trio of Tukur Yahaya, 55; Idris Haruna, 28; and Tanimu Umar, 29, were nabbed with 90 blocks of cannabis weighing 116.8kg at Roni junction, Kazaure LGA, on Friday 19th July while on their way to supply the illicit drugs to their customers in Kazaure, Yankwashi and Katsina state.”
Babafemi added: “Similarly, the duo of Ibrahim Abdulkadir, 29, and Suleman Mohammed, 22, were arrested with 336 bottles of codeine syrup at Amingo, Kaduna, while Auwalu Hashimu, 35, was nabbed with 45 kilograms of cannabis along Zaria- Kano highway.
“Acting on credible intelligence, a team of NDLEA operatives backed by soldiers raided a mechanic workshop opposite Benin garage, Akure, Ondo state where they recovered a white Toyota Hilux Van with registration number EE 328 EKY loaded with 652 parcels of cannabis weighing 685kg.
“In Nasarawa state, 38kg of the same psychoactive substance and a locally made AK-47 rifle were recovered from the home of a suspect, Christopher Ombugadu, 32, in Akwanga during a raid on Sunday 14th July.”
Reacting to the development, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the officers and men of MMIA, Tincan, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Ondo, Kaduna, Jigawa, Osun, Yobe, Plateau, Kogi, Imo and FCT Commands of the Agency for the arrests and seizures.

Dangote Refinery Paid $100m For Land, Received No Incentive From Nigerian Govt — Aliko
![](https://spazr.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Dangote-Refinery-Paid-100m-For-Land-Received-No-Incentive-From.jpg)
On Saturday, July 20, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, stated that he did not enjoy any incentive from the Nigerian government to build his $20bn refinery sited at the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
Dangote made this known when he received the leadership of the House of Representatives led by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas and his deputy, Benjamin Kalu.
“In the refinery, we did not, and I repeat, we did not collect one single incentive from the Federal Government of Nigeria or even Lagos State.
“Yes, the Lagos State gave us a good deal but we paid $100m for the land. It wasn’t free land; we paid for it,” he said.
“Majority of the population are with us. So, we are not discouraged, we will continue what we are doing.”
Dangote further called on the House of Representatives to investigate the quality of diesel and petrol at filling stations, refuting the claims that petroleum products from his refinery are substandard.
Dangote also urged the House to set up a committee to test products at various filling stations across the country, decrying the damage being done to vehicles and engines by substandard products.

Onanuga Will Destroy Nigeria If You Don’t Restrain Him – Obidigbo To Tinubu
![](https://spazr.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Onanuga-Will-Destroy-Nigeria-If-You-Dont-Restrain-Him-–.jpg)
Dr Chike Obidigbo, an elder statesman, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to restrain his aide, Bayo Onanuga, from making intemperate public statements that could destroy Nigeria.
Obidigbo regretted that the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Strategy has been making inciting remarks and provocative hate speeches that could not only damage Nigeria’s feeble national cohesion but also set the nation on a needless conflagration.
The industrialist condemned Onanuga’s recent statement claiming that the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party LP), Peter Obi and his supporters called the Obidients should be blamed for the planned national protest against bad governance.
In a statement released to journalists on Sunday, Obidigbo lamented that despite Onanuga’s experience in media practice and knowledge of Nigeria’s troubled political history, the presidential aide continues to spew hate and divisive utterances.
“Many people still remember Onanuga’s role during the military era, when the Nigerian press adopted guerilla tactics to call attention to the oppressive regimes in the country. But, having witnessed and currently benefiting from the nation’s democracy, this veteran journalist has thrown caution to the wind.
“Onanuga has formed the habit of talking down on Nigerians as if he is at the head of a military junta. When he is not withdrawing ill-conceived communication, he churns out statements dripping with deep-seated bile and hateful innuendos sentences.
“His latest attempt to link the former Governor of Anambra State with the youth-propelled national protest comes as one of the unthinking statements unbefitting a presidential aide. Onanuga should be reminded that when the dark clouds he is invoking bring down rain, nobody’s roof will be safe,” Obidigbo stated.
He regretted that at a time when countless multinational business organisations were leaving the country due to unstable economic indices, the likes of Onanuga should find time to gloat about the last presidential election.
Obidigbo stated: “Onanuga and indeed all those in public offices should reckon that Nigeria is at a tricky crossroads and show some level of empathy to Nigerian masses who are going through excruciating hardship compounded by insecurity, rising food prices and cost of living challenges.
“In his heart of hearts, Bayo Onanuga knows that Mr Peter Obi has been exemplary in conduct and character and has remained focused on the issues of economic development, especially mitigating mass poverty and giving a helping hand to the poorest of the poor.
“During the electioneering, Mr Peter was elegant in his public communication and campaign messaging. He resisted provocations and attempts to be drawn to divisive rhetoric that bedevilled Nigeria’s partisan politics.
“But, Onanuga’s attempt to single out Igbo for hate by his dangerous innuendo is not lost on well-meaning Nigerians. This is not the first time the veteran journalist should descend so low to promote bigotry and ethnic baiting against the Igbo. And it is high time President Tinubu calls him to order unless Igbo bashing is at the core of the presidential communication.”
Obidigbo said the myriad of socio-economic challenges confronting Nigeria trumps the continuing efforts to isolate Igbo through nepotism and ethnic bashing, adding that the day equity and justice become the hallmark of national reconciliation, Nigeria will begin the process of national healing.
“Denying Igbo of political offices could be excused but trying to despoil their reputation and dependence on self-help could end up as the last straw that breaks the Camel’s back,” he cautioned.

Restore Anchor Borrowers’ Programme – Dangote advises Nigerian govt
![](https://spazr.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Monopolistic-claim-disheartening-we-never-blocked-anybody-doing-same-business.jpg)
The chairman of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has urged the federal government to bring back the Anchors Borrowers’ Programme, which gulped N1.1 trillion before its suspension in 2022....Read More
Dangote disclosed this on Saturday while on a tour with the leadership of the House Representatives, led by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbass, at his fertiliser plant.
According to him, farmers need the programme to upscale their businesses.
“Farmers don’t have money. That’s the main reason why the government should consider bringing back the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme,” the businessman said.
He added that his fertiliser would focus on local farmers.
“We were exporting because we needed to reduce demand. But we only have one ship, which will leave at the end of the month. Right now, we are loading only for local use.
“The farmers need to grow food. And that’s why we give them fertiliser in advance. Then they will now go and pay me back,” Dangote said.
The Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, which took off in 2015 under former Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor, Godwin Emefiele, was suspended in 2022 owing to some farmers’ inability to pay back the loans they collected from the bank.
DAILY POST recalls that the House of Representatives and Senate had, on separate occasions, ordered probes into the N1.12 trillion Anchor Borrowers scheme.
