Fr. Ugwu particularly called out two prominent Nigerian pastors— Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, leader of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry (CMDM), and Prophet Chukwuemeka Odumeje, founder of The Mountain of Holy Ghost Intervention and Deliverance Ministry— accusing them of incorporating occult practices into their ministries.
The Catholic priest alleged that Prophet Fufeyin’ s activities, including selling religious items such as water and oil, resemble the practices of traditional medicine men rather than Christian faith.
He asserted that over 90% of Fufeyin’ s ministry involves actions that are rooted in juju, further claiming that these rituals are disguised as divine interventions.
Similarly, Fr. Ugwu accused Prophet Odumeje of using occult rituals in his religious activities. He referenced a widely shared event where Odumeje poured seven bottles of Goya oil around his new home to ward off evil spirits. According to Fr. Ugwu, this act mirrors traditional spiritual cleansing rituals rather than Christian doctrine.
The priest lamented that these practices have gradually become accepted in many churches, leading followers to embrace superstition in place of genuine faith. He warned that such trends are eroding Christian teachings and urged believers to remain vigilant against deceptive religious practices.
The allegations have sparked debates within religious circles, with some followers supporting Fr. Ugwu’ s stance while others defend the accused pastors. Neither Prophet Odumeje nor Prophet Fufeyin has publicly responded to the claims. However, the controversy highlights ongoing concerns about the blending of traditional spirituality with modern Christian worship in Nigeria and beyond.
As discussions continue, religious leaders and worshippers alike are being urged to examine their faith practices critically and distinguish between authentic Christianity and what some perceive as ritualistic deviations.
