A Dream Nurtured Through Guidance

When Busi* first attended the GCF parenting sessions, facilitated by community worker Linda Mavundla, she was unsure of what lay ahead. An unemployed widow caring for her young grandchildren, Busi arrived with significant insecurities and struggled with communication.

Linda Mavundla recalls Busi’s initial state. “She is a widowed, unemployed mother, now caring for her young grandchildren. She was insecure and didn’t really know how to communicate well with the people around her, including her children,” Linda shares.

Linda’s work focuses on bringing essential social services to communities where many lack access. Through weekly training sessions and ongoing support groups, she witnesses profound personal transformations. Busi’s journey stands as a powerful example of this change.

From Insecurity to Entrepreneurship

The parenting training became a catalyst for Busi’s personal growth. “Busi grew in confidence and learned so much,” Linda observes. “She had always liked to help others, especially those who were suffering, and had a dream of opening a crèche one day.”

Equipped with new knowledge and skills from GCF’s Families 4 Life programme, Busi turned her long-held aspiration into a tangible reality. She has now established a small crèche, operating from her sister’s home, where she provides daily care for several children while their parents are at work.

This achievement is part of a broader pattern of success. Linda notes with pride the progress of all the women in her group since their graduation. While not everyone started a crèche, several now work at local childcare facilities. Strengthened by their training and with a deeper understanding of children’s needs, they are now trusted to care for others’ children and have gained stable employment.

A Ripple Effect of Positive Change

The transformation these women have undergone echoes the words of Maya Angelou: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” The mothers in Linda’s group have embodied this principle, applying their newfound knowledge to create better lives for their families.

With access to critical support and guidance, many for the first time, these women have unlocked potential that was always within them. This awakening is now transforming their homes and likely shaping brighter futures for their children. Furthermore, like many of GCF’s past parenting skills learners, they are poised to share this knowledge with relatives and neighbors, creating a positive ripple effect throughout the community.

The story of Busi and her peers demonstrates the profound impact of targeted family support. You can contribute to this ongoing transformation. Consider signing up as a monthly giver or making a one-time donation to support the vital work of GCF.
