Five persons including a herdsman identified as Issa Ibrahim, were on Tuesday, handed death sentences over the abduction and killing of his father, Adamu Ibrahim, despite collecting a ransom of three million naira.

The Osun State High Court in Ede convicted Issa Ibrahim, Lateef Bello, Abdulrahmon Soliu, Bello Ibrahim, and Jolaanabi Saheed. The mother of Jolaanabi, Ajibola Saheed, was initially arraigned with them but later discharged of the offences.

The accused were charged with conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder. Despite pleading not guilty, the prosecuting counsel from the Osun State Ministry of Justice, Moses Faremi, presented three witnesses, including two sons of the deceased and a police officer. Key evidence included a stool and a club recovered from Jolaanabi’s house, where Adamu Ibrahim was held after his abduction on April 17, 2017.

According to Faremi, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of 10 million naira, later reduced to 3 million naira, which was paid in Sagamu, Ogun State. During his captivity, Adamu Ibrahim recognized his abductors when the veil covering his face fell, prompting the kidnappers to kill and dismember him, disposing of his body parts in the Osun River.

Issa Ibrahim, the deceased’s son, reportedly orchestrated the kidnapping, claiming his father had denied him his birthright, and urged the gang to kidnap him for ransom.

Despite the defence’s denial of involvement and submission of a no-case argument, Justice Kudirat Akano found the prosecution had sufficiently proven the charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder through confessional statements and eyewitness testimony.

Justice Akano sentenced the convicts to 14 years imprisonment for conspiracy, 14 years for kidnapping, and death for murder, with the terms to run concurrently.

The family of a businesswoman, Abdulrafiu Hamidat has been reported missing in Kogi State.
 
Hamidat, who sells unisex clothes, hails from Idare in Okene Local Government Area of the state.
 
She left home for Lokoja on the 18th of June, 2024 to collect money from an unnamed customer who bought goods on credit and never returned since then.
 
According to her sister, she called to inform them when she arrived in Lokoja but nothing has been heard from her since the phone call.
 
She said the police have not done anything after the case was reported.

This comes several days after the grand wedding of Davido and his wife, which was attended by notable individuals.

Although K1 De Ultimate was not seen at the event, a fresh video on social media shows the moment Davido introduced his wife to him.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu has been accused of sidelining first-term members during debates.

Cyril Hart, who represents the Bonny/Degema federal constituency of Rivers State, made this allegation during a discussion on the recent su*cide bombings in Borno State.

The motion on the Borno bombings was presented by Ahmed Jaha (APC, Borno). During the debate, Deputy Speaker Kalu permitted contributions from former Deputy Speaker Idris Wase, Chairman of the Committee on Navy Yusuf Gagdi, and Chairman of the Committee on Defence Babajimi Benson. However, despite several indications from other members wishing to speak, Kalu cited time constraints and did not allow further debate.

As Kalu moved to put the motion to a vote, Hart raised a point of order. He accused the deputy speaker of showing bias against new members, noting that only senior members were allowed to speak on the motion. Hart claimed this has become a recurring pattern under Kalu’s presiding, where senior members are consistently given preferential treatment.

Hart said while some lawmakers on the floor cheered him;

“You don’t give preference to first-timers… you don’t. This is what you always do. You need to allow for first-timers.”

Kalu responded by saying “There is no discrimination in the parliament.”

Not satisfied with this, Mr Hart continued to speak despite his microphone being switched off by the presiding officer and stormed out of the chamber in protest.

A 36-year-old Nigerian national, Onyebuchi, who was accused of attacking a security guard and police officers with a machete in Cambodia, has been arrested.

The incident took place on June 30, 2024, in Prey Ta Nou Village, Chak Angre Leu Commune, Mean Chey District, Phnom Penh.

According to reports published by Cambodia media on Wednesday, July 3, the suspect attempted to enter a building while wielding a machete.

When the security guard tried to prevent his entry, Onyebuchi struck him on the hand and then fled into the building.

Authorities were alerted, and upon arrival, they chased the suspect to the 3rd floor of the building where he attacked officers, injuring one in the hand.

The injured officer required 20 stitches to repair the wound.

 Onyebuchi was then subdued and taken into custody for questioning.

The incident is currently under investigation.  
 

Rochas Okorocha

A five-storey building belonging to Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State, along Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja, has collapsed.

According to The Nation, the building collapsed around around 9 pm yesterday sending panic to the entire neighbourhood.

In a swift reaction, personnel of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command immediately cordoned off the entire area.

It was gathered that the collapsed building was under renovation.

Eyewitnesses said some persons might have been trapped in the building.

“There is a possibility that there could be some people inside the collapsed building who may have died. I saw two people being pulled out from the rubble now and taken to the hospital while rescue operations were ongoing. The emergency responders are not coordinated yet for efficient operations,” an eyewitness told the aforementioned publication.

However, in a statement by the spokesperson of the Command, Josephine Adeh, three persons were rescued from the collapsed building.

The statement partly reads: “The FCT Police Command hereby confirms that yesterday, July 1, 2024, about 8:40 p.m., there was a building collapse at Unity House, Area 11 by Nkwere Street.

“In response to the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, psc, mni, promptly moved to the scene with multiple patrol teams as first responders to cordon off the area for possible rescue.

“Three victims were successfully evacuated from the collapsed building and rushed to the hospital for medical care.”

Tomilola, a Canada-based Nigerian lawyer, who is married to a white man, has called out one of her followers.

She called out the follower for bashing white people on her Instagram page.

The lady had commented on one of Tomilola’s pregnancy posts with her husband, saying that white people are ‘’vindictive, untrustworthy, harbour a lot of hate and jealousy. ‘’

“It’s unfortunate that I even have to address this but please note that you are not allowed to put out general statements bashing white people on my page for a couple of reasons,” Tomi wrote in an Instagram story on Tuesday.

“It’s hateful to bash an entire race of people. My husband is white, my daughter is half-white, meaning half of my family is mostly white, so I clearly don’t share your views.”

Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State has reacted to moves to create a state for the Southeast.

Igbokwe applauded the move, saying the renewed agitation for the creation of more states in the Southeast is in the right direction.

Posting on his Facebook, the APC chieftain wrote: “Nigeria is still owing the Southeast additional one state and one governor.”

Igbokwe’s remark comes as the bill seeking to create Adada State passed its first reading in the Senate on Tuesday.

The bill, which has been cited as the “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2024 (SB. 482)” was sponsored by the lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Senator Okey Ezea.

Ezea said the bill seeks to amend Section 3(1) and the First Schedule, Part 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allow for the creation of another state in the South-East region.

Also, the bill for the creation of Etiti State passed its first reading in the House of Representatives.

If the bill scales through, Etiti will be created from Anambra, Abia, Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi States.

Five members of the House of Representatives, Amobi Ogah, Miriam Onuoha, Kama Nkemkama, Chinwe Nnabuife, and Anayo Onwuegbu, presented the proposal to form a new state from the five states in the region.

Etiti will consist of 11 Local Government Areas selected from the mentioned states with the capital city designated to be situated in Lokpanta.

This is coming after podcast host, Moet Abebe disclosed that they have been dating for 12 years.
