ARVs Found Among Wreckage

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni expressed concern over “buckets of ARV drugs and other prescription medication” discovered without documentation among the wreckage. She confirmed that law enforcement agencies are treating the case as a potential instance of pharmaceutical smuggling.

“A full-scale investigation has been launched,” Ntshavheni said. “The theft of ARVs undermines our fight for an HIV-free region. Irregular use of these drugs can cause resistance, worsening the HIV crisis.”

Call for Accountability and Respect for Laws

Ntshavheni urged all foreign nationals to obey South African laws, noting that evidence of medication theft from public clinics complicates efforts to ensure fair access to healthcare services for everyone.

“Cabinet calls on all foreign nationals to be well-mannered guests in South Africa. Proof of theft from government clinics damages trust and makes it harder to protect access for foreign nationals in our public health system,” she said.

Government Expands HIV Prevention Initiatives

The Minister also announced that South Africa will roll out a new HIV prevention injection, Lenacapavir, early next year. The biannual shot, taken once every six months, will be introduced in 23 high-incidence districts across six provinces, targeting about 360 high-performing public clinics.

“This rollout will strengthen the Cabinet’s fight against HIV and AIDS and help reduce new infections to below 0.1% by 2032,” she added.

U.S. Approves $115 Million HIV Support Plan

Ntshavheni confirmed that the U.S. government has approved a $115 million PEPFAR Bridge Plan (PBP) for South Africa. The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted HIV service delivery, prioritising local needs and life-saving impact.

“We thank the U.S. government for its continued partnership and support in South Africa’s fight against HIV,” Ntshavheni said.
