There was high drama at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 14 October 2025, when Chief Magistrate Vusimuzi Mahlangu abruptly recused himself from presiding over the bail modification hearing of Dumisani Khumalo, who faces fraud and racketeering charges....Click to Read More >>➤
Mahlangu’s withdrawal came shortly after his name surfaced at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi reportedly mentioned him in sworn testimony.
“In light of recent developments and to avoid any perception of bias, I find it necessary to step aside from this matter,” Mahlangu said before adjourning the session.
The commission is investigating alleged misconduct and interference within South Africa’s judiciary and law enforcement sectors. While the full details of the claims against Mahlangu remain undisclosed, the development has raised questions about judicial integrity and accountability.
The case of Dumisani Khumalo — who remains under strict bail conditions restricting his travel and requiring regular check-ins — will now be reassigned to another magistrate. Legal analysts say Mahlangu’s recusal underscores the growing impact of the Madlanga Commission’s revelations on active court proceedings.
The Office of the Chief Justice has yet to comment, while the commission is expected to continue hearings later this week.
