The rescue on November 13th concluded months of efforts by the SPCA to compel the owners to improve the animals’ welfare. Inspectors had repeatedly documented the dire situation behind High Riding Drive.

The pigs were forced to endure months without reliable shelter or clean water. Their living area was contaminated with mud and waste.

Inspector Lwazi Ntungele detailed the grim scene. He said the animals were stranded in mud and their own excrement when it rained. During hot weather, they were found with no water at all.

Some of the pigs were also suffering from untreated medical conditions. The SPCA stated that letting the animals suffer after being shown a better way was inhumane.

A Long Road to Rescue

The SPCA’s intervention involved a lengthy process of engagement and education. The team provided repeated warnings and support aimed at compelling the owners to comply with animal welfare standards.

Despite these efforts, the property owners failed to make the necessary improvements. This persistent non-compliance left the SPCA with no other option.

The organization sought and was granted legal authority under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. A warrant was issued authorizing the seizure of all 96 pigs.

The rescue was executed in full compliance with the law. It was carried out under the supervision of the relevant authorities.

The SPCA emphasized that the action was neither sudden nor unjust. They stated that every possible chance was given to the owners to improve conditions.

“This rescue was lawful. It was compassionate. And it was necessary,” the SPCA confirmed. The situation represented a direct contravention of South African law.

New Beginnings at the SPCA

The 96 pigs are now safe at the SPCA’s farmyard facility. They are receiving critical veterinary care for their various ailments.

For the first time in months, the animals have constant access to fresh water and nutritious food. They are also protected by proper shelter from the elements.

The SPCA will provide ongoing care for the animals until the legal process is finalized. Their recovery is now the top priority.
