Richard Fourie: Bookies’ Top Jockey Pick

The race for South Africa’s champion jockey title is heating up with an intriguing twist. Despite Craig Zackey holding a commanding 15-win lead on the current log, betting markets have installed his rival, Richard Fourie, as the odds-on favourite to claim the championship....Click to Read More >>➤

Zackey, riding with clear determination to secure his first-ever jockey championship, has notched up 84 winners. A remarkable dozen of those victories came in the past week alone, showcasing his current form and relentless travel schedule. He is riding for a wide range of trainers, a strategy that appears to be paying dividends. However, bookmaker Hollywoodbets has priced him at 1.11, making him the slight underdog in the betting arena.

The betting favourite status has shifted to Richard Fourie, who is quoted at 0.91. Fourie, the record-breaking champion from the 2023/24 season, has signaled his intention to expand his traveling itinerary in the coming weeks. This announcement was enough for oddsmakers to install him as the frontrunner, despite his current position on the log. Fourie narrowly lost the title last season in a dramatic finish.

Chasing the Leaders

Sitting a distant third in the betting at 12.50 is Callan Murray. Murray returned to South Africa as the stable jockey for the powerful Mike & Mathew de Kock yard. While his connection to a top stable is a significant advantage, his commitment to their KwaZulu-Natal and Highveld bases may limit his ability to chase winners nationwide. This makes a serious title challenge a difficult prospect, though racing often produces surprises.

Reigning champion Gavin Lerena finds himself as a longshot at 33.00. Lerena mounted an incredible late-season charge to pip Fourie for the 2024/25 title, but a lengthy suspension early in the current campaign has left him with a substantial deficit to overcome.

Trainers’ Championship Odds

In the race for the champion trainer title, which is determined by stake money won and not the number of winners, Justin Snaith is an overwhelming favourite. Priced at a short 0.5, Snaith is seeking his seventh championship title, backed by the formidable arsenal of horses in his Cape Town stable.

Sean Tarry, a former champion himself, is seen as the primary challenger at 6.25. With a promising crop of young talent progressing through his yard, the likeable Highveld conditioner could attract smart money. The Mike & Mathew de Kock partnership shares the same 6.25 odds, highlighting the threat they pose.

The official betting markets for the jockeys’ and trainers’ championships are as follows:
