During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the If I Had Legs I’d Kick You star opened up about the reality of balancing motherhood and acting, sharing a candid laugh with host Seth Meyers about the experience.

“Kids Don’t Care If You’ve Had a Long Day”

When asked whether she found relief coming home to her children after filming a movie about the anxieties of parenting, Byrne responded with honesty: “I mean, yeah. No.”

She explained, “Kids don’t care if you’ve had a long day or you’re tired. But that’s so refreshing because you have to just snap out of it. It’s church and state.”

The Platonic actress, 46, shares two sons — Rocco (born in 2016) and Rafael (born in 2017) — with her husband, Bobby Cannavale. Cannavale, 55, also has an older son, Jake, from his previous marriage to Jenny Lumet.

Balancing Work and Family Life

Byrne and Cannavale have worked together on multiple films, including Spy, Adult Beginners, Annie, and Ezra. The couple says they try to coordinate projects so their family can stay together as much as possible.

Speaking on Today earlier this year, Cannavale said, “We shot Ezra here in New York and New Jersey, and the kids know where we are at all times when we’re working together — so that’s nice.”

He added, “Our life is really just… aside from raising the kids, it’s all about scheduling. We always say, ‘We’ve got to keep the band together,’ so we take the kids with us wherever we go.”

Parenting Lessons and Real Talk

Byrne has been open about the challenges of raising young children close in age. In a 2018 interview with MiNDFOOD, she admitted, “I’m always thinking I’m going to be on top of everything and I never am. I’m completely overwhelmed. I have no business telling anyone how to do parenting — I’m totally learning on the job.”

Despite both parents’ success in Hollywood, Byrne says she hopes her kids will find their own unique paths in life. “Maybe my kids will want to do something really different — like run a granola company or become accountants,” she once joked in an interview with Jones Magazine.
