Sassa Denies Viral Claims of Double Grant Payments, Urges Public Vigilance...Click to Read More >>➤
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has moved swiftly to debunk a viral social media rumor claiming beneficiaries will receive double payments. The agency labeled the information as false and warned it is causing unnecessary panic among millions of vulnerable citizens who depend on social grants.
On Wednesday, Sassa expressed increasing concern over the rapid spread of this false information across online platforms. The posts falsely suggested that the government had authorized an extra payment for grant recipients this month. The agency issued a clear and direct statement to counter the claims.
Sassa would like to categorically state that this is not true. There has been no announcement of a social grants double payment by Sassa or the government. The agency strongly urged the public not to share or engage with such misinformation, highlighting the damaging real-world effects these false claims can trigger.
Verify Before You Share
Sassa’s national spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi, cautioned the public against the reckless sharing of unverified content. He emphasized the importance of checking facts before spreading information related to social grants. Letsatsi said that sharing false information causes anxiety and stress to beneficiaries.
He explained that fake news surrounding grant payments creates confusion and erodes trust. This is particularly harmful for the millions of South Africans for whom these funds are a lifeline. The agency appealed to beneficiaries to rely only on credible sources of information published on its official websites and social media pages.
Millions Rely on Grant Stability
According to Sassa, social grants remain the primary source of income for more than 19 million South Africans. The agency warned that misinformation does more than just mislead recipients. It causes untold panic and stress to individuals and families who depend on these monthly payouts for their basic survival.
Sassa called on all South Africans to halt the spread of these false claims. The agency reiterated its appeal for beneficiaries to be vigilant and cautious about the information they consume online. Confirming news through official channels is the only way to ensure accuracy.
