According to Chron, the bishop argued that Gerlach committed adultery by engaging in a sexting relationship, which violated the sixth commandment and her virginity vow.
By October, the Catholic leader in charge of the nuns had dismissed the religious order, and on November 28, the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, a group within the Catholic Church that oversees religious orders, issued a decree of suppression to the Discalced Carmelite Monastery of Arlington, according to KERA News.
