Appearing before Parliament’s ad hoc committee on the criminal infiltration of the police, Sibiya firmly denied claims that he was involved in manipulating the crime scene or interfering in the 2014 murder probe.

The allegations first surfaced during 2022 court proceedings when former advocate Malesela Teffo, who once represented four of the men accused of killing Meyiwa, alleged—without evidence—that senior Gauteng police officials had orchestrated a cover-up. Teffo named Brigadier Philani Ndlovu, former Gauteng Hawks head Sibiya, and then-Gauteng head of safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane as participants in an alleged meeting to “stage” the crime scene.

Testifying on Tuesday, Sibiya said he welcomed the opportunity to set the record straight.

“I’m actually happy that I’m being asked on this, so I can finally tell South Africans. I was at home; I got a call from the provincial commissioner. I didn’t even know about the shooting until later that night,” he said.

According to Sibiya, he learned of Meyiwa’s death around 11 p.m., roughly three hours after the fatal shooting at the home of Kelly Khumalo’s mother in Vosloorus. He stressed that, while he responded to the scene as a senior officer, he did not participate in the operational aspects of the investigation.

“I just wanted to say to South Africans, I am not involved. I’ve never done anything wrong, and there have been more than ten different teams that investigated this matter. I did nothing to make the case unsuccessful,” Sibiya added.

Sibiya recalled rushing to the hospital upon hearing the news, describing Meyiwa as “a national asset.”

“When I got to the hospital, it was full — people were crying, even in the passage. I saw him lying motionless inside the ward,” he said.

From there, he proceeded to the crime scene to ensure that standard procedures were followed.

“When we got to the house, the first thing was to take charge of the scene. The team had to remove everyone inside to outside,” he said.

However, Sibiya told the committee that by the time he arrived, the scene had already been processed by forensic experts.

“I arrived late at night. The scene was already processed — clean, no blood. The experts had done their work,” he explained.

The ongoing Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has captivated the nation for nearly a decade. Five men — Muzi Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Ntuli — are currently on trial, all pleading not guilty.
