on

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed reports that its officials thwarted an abduction attempt in the Mushin area of the state on Thursday, July 4.

In a statement released, the spokesperson of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the command got intelligence that the notorious gang responsible for the kidnap of prominent people in the state were planning to strike. He said the command acted on time and was able to foil their plans.

The kidnappers who were caught unawares were engaged by the superior power of the authorities, leading to their demise.

Nine of them were neutralized while two others escaped with gunshot injuries.

Read the statement below;

‘’The Lagos State Police Command under the stewardship of CP Adegoke Fayoade, mni recorded a major breakthrough yesterday, Thursday, July 4, 2024. Our intelligence-gathering assets yielded very credible and actionable intelligence about a dangerous and very notorious gang of kidnappers planning to kidnap some high net-worth individuals in Lagos.

Upon receipt of this intelligence about two weeks ago, CP Fayoade directed the Command’s tactical teams to commence work on it. They followed up closely, monitored dutifully and were able to determine that the gang was going to strike yesterday in Ladipo area of Lagos State. With the benefit of this information, we were able to proactively prepare for them and more or less laid an ambush for them.

The kidnappers who were caught unawares would not give up easily as they engaged the police officers in a shoot-out. They of course bowed to the superior fire power of the police. Nine of them were neutralized while two escaped with gunshot injuries. Four AK-47 rifles, four locally-made semiautomatic pistols, nine AK47 magazines, three walkie-talkies, one POS machine and a loud speaker were recovered from them. Also recovered are their two operational vehicles: one black Toyota 4Runner and a blue Lexus RX350. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.

It is worthy of note that the Command had been on the trail of this gang for the past eight months for their numerous kidnapping of wealthy individuals in Isolo, Okota, Ejigbo and Ladipo areas of Lagos State. We are proud to declare that their reign of terror has effectively come to an end.

This breakthrough is in addition to several other breakthroughs we have made in recent times in identifying and apprehending gangs of kidnappers and armed robbers while planning their crimes. Many of these were not made public so as to protect the identity of members of the public that made the information available.

We urge everyone including medical practitioners to be on the lookout for anyone with gunshot injuries and promptly inform the nearest police station or call any of our emergency numbers if they come across any. We also use this medium to call on other well meaning Lagosians not to hesitate in giving us information when they suspect anything amiss around them to enable us act appropriately and swiftly. On our part, we promise to continue to prioritize their safety and security.”

A Nigerian woman, Michelle Buchi has taken to Facebook to narrate how she walked in on her workers speaking ill about her after buying food for them.

According to her, she had earlier refused to allow them to buy the work materials by themselves because they planned on inflating the price.

She is seeking advice from the public if she should still give them the food she purchased.

“I bought lunch for jobmen working for me. I overheard them talking bad about me on my way in. Should I still give them the food,” she wrote in a post on Friday.

“The offense I committed was that I didn’t allow them to buy materials by themselves when they planned to give me triple the amount the materials are sold in the market.”

Responsible Gambling: Tips for Nigerian Players

Published

on

Responsible gambling is a crucial aspect of online gaming, and Nigerian players are no exception. With the rise of online gambling in Nigeria, players need to understand the importance of responsible gambling and the tools available to help them stay in control.

One of the most trustworthy and reliable tools for responsible gambling is Net Nanny, which allows players to set limits on their gambling activities. This tool is particularly useful for players who want to stop gambling and need extra support. Additionally, the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) is responsible for enforcing regulations and ensuring operators comply with state and federal laws to promote responsible gambling.

The online casino website, JeffBet, provided tips for Nigerian players to gamble responsibly and the tools available to help them stay in control. By following these tips and using the available tools, players can enjoy their gaming experience safely and controlled while operators uphold ethical standards and protect their customers.

Understanding Responsible Gambling in Nigeria

Responsible gambling is an essential aspect of the gambling industry, and Nigeria is no exception. Nigerian players are encouraged to gamble responsibly to avoid falling into gambling addiction. The Nigerian government and regulatory bodies have implemented several measures to promote responsible gambling practices.

The Role of the Nigerian Government and Regulatory Bodies

The Nigerian government has proactively regulated the gambling industry to ensure player safety. The National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) is the primary regulatory body responsible for regulating the gambling industry in Nigeria. The NLRC’s mandate is to ensure that all operators comply with legal standards and licensing regimes. The Commission also ensures that operators adhere to responsible gaming practices.

National Lottery Regulatory Commission and Consumer Protection

The National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) ensures that operators adhere to responsible gaming practices. The NLRC has implemented several measures to promote responsible gambling, including a self-exclusion program that allows players to exclude themselves from gambling activities for a specific period.

Additionally, the NLRC has established a consumer protection department to protect players from unfair treatment by operators. The department receives and investigates player complaints and takes appropriate action against operators who violate the rules.

In 2005, the Nigerian government passed the National Lottery Act, which regulates the gambling industry in Nigeria. The Act provides a legal framework for the industry and ensures that all operators comply with the law. The Act also establishes the NLRC as the primary regulatory body responsible for regulating the industry.

The Nigerian government and regulatory bodies have implemented measures to promote responsible gambling practices. Nigerian players are encouraged to gamble responsibly, and operators are required to adhere to responsible gaming practices. The industry is regulated by the NLRC, which ensures that all operators comply with legal standards and licensing regimes. The NLRC also has a consumer protection department that protects players from unfair treatment by operators.

Practical Measures for Responsible Gaming

Setting Limits and Understanding Self-Exclusion

One of the most important practical measures for responsible gaming is setting limits. Nigerian players must understand their financial situation and set a budget before playing. They should also set limits on the amount of time they spend gambling. This will help them avoid the risk of losing more than they can afford and prevent gambling addiction.

Self-exclusion is another important measure Nigerian players can take to ensure responsible gaming. Self-exclusion programs allow players to voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling activities for a specific period. This can help players who feel they have a gambling problem to take a break and seek help.

Tools and Support for Responsible Gaming

Several tools and support systems are available for Nigerian players to ensure responsible gaming. Gamstop, Gamban, and Betfilter are software tools that can block access to gambling websites and apps. These tools can be useful for players who struggle with gambling addiction or want to take a break from gambling.

Self-exclusion programs are also available at many casinos and sports betting sites in Nigeria. These programs allow players to exclude themselves from gambling activities for a specific period. Additionally, many sites provide support and helplines for players needing safe gaming assistance.

It is important for Nigerian players to be aware of gambling risks and take measures to ensure their safety. By setting limits, understanding self-exclusion, and utilising available tools and support, Nigerian players can enjoy a safe and responsible gaming experience.

The Socio-Economic Impact of Gambling in Nigeria

Promoting Economic Prosperity and Addressing Challenges

Gambling has been a significant source of entertainment in Nigeria for many years. The industry has grown rapidly in recent years, providing immediate income and creating job opportunities for many Nigerians. In 2018, Nigeria became Africa’s second-largest online gambling market, with a Gross Gaming Revenue of $58 million. The growth of the gambling industry has contributed to Nigeria’s economic development and has promoted economic prosperity.

However, the gambling industry in Nigeria faces several challenges, including financial mismanagement, underage betting, and dishonest practices by bookies and independent bookmakers. The government has addressed these challenges by introducing regulations and enforcing age verification requirements. The government has also collaborated with sports organisations and associations to promote responsible gambling and warn against the negative effects of massive gambling.

The Effects of Gambling on Society and Individuals

The effects of gambling on society and individuals are a matter of concern in Nigeria. The gambling industry has had both positive and negative impacts on society. On the one hand, it has contributed to the economy, promoted economic development, and created job opportunities. On the other hand, it has led to social values erosion and has had negative effects on individuals and families.

The excitement of gambling, especially on football and sports teams, has led to massive gambling and financial challenges for many Nigerians. The industry has also led to the sponsorship of events and sports teams, which has contributed to the industry’s growth. However, the industry has also led to the exploitation of vulnerable people, including those with low incomes and those with gambling addictions.

Community efforts and educational establishments have been implemented to promote health consciousness and informed decision-making among Nigerians. Warning signs and support and recovery programs have also been introduced to help those with gambling addictions.

The ideal gambling industry in Nigeria should promote responsible gambling, collaborate with sports organisations and associations, and address the industry’s challenges. The government should continue to enforce regulations and age verification requirements to protect vulnerable people. High-income earners should also be encouraged to participate in the industry to promote economic prosperity.

Advancing Responsible Gambling: The Future Outlook

Innovations and Reforms in the Nigerian Gambling Space

The Nigerian gambling industry has seen significant growth in recent years, with the sector expected to be worth $2 billion by 2023. With this growth comes the need for responsible gambling practices to ensure the safety and well-being of players. To achieve this, the industry is exploring various innovations and reforms to promote responsible gambling.

One of the key innovations is using technology to enhance transparency and social responsibility. The introduction of Ayo, a mobile app that allows players to monitor their gambling activities and set limits on their spending, is a prime example. This app promotes safe gaming methods and encourages players to gamble responsibly.

Another reform introduced is the collaboration between the Nigerian government and the UK Gambling Commission. This partnership aims to improve the regulation of the Nigerian gambling industry and ensure that operators adhere to responsible gambling practices. The UK Gambling Commission has a wealth of experience in this area and can provide valuable insights to help Nigerian operators promote responsible gambling.

Fostering a Culture of Responsible Gaming

To ensure that responsible gambling practices become ingrained in the Nigerian gambling culture, there is a need for educational campaigns and prevention programs. These campaigns should focus on promoting responsible gambling practices and raising awareness of the potential risks associated with gambling.

Lotteries are also an effective way of promoting responsible gambling practices. The proceeds from the lotteries can be used to fund prevention programs and educational campaigns. This approach has been successful in other African countries and could be replicated in Nigeria.

The future outlook for responsible gambling in Nigeria is positive. The industry is exploring various innovations and reforms to promote responsible gambling, and there is a growing emphasis on fostering a culture of responsible gaming. With the right approach, Nigeria can become a leader in responsible gambling practices in Africa.

My Son Was Not A Cultist

Published

on

Mr Musibau Fabiyi, the father of late Hammed Ayinla Fabiyi, the final-year student of Tai Solarin University (TASUED) who was dragged out of an exam hall and shot dead by suspected cult members has debunked claims by law enforcement that his son was a cultist.

On July 4, a group of suspected cultists stormed an exam hall while exams were ongoing and dragged out Hammed, a 400-level student of history at the Ogun state-owned university.

An eyewitness account and footage had it that the victim was lynched afterwards.

The attackers, all dressed in white shirts, fled the scene before campus security arrived.

The Ogun state police command stated that Hammed was a member of the Eiye cult group.

According to the Ogun State Police Command PRO, Omolola Odutola, the attackers are a group of “about six” men who belonged to a rival confraternity called the Aye.

However, the victim’s father has denied that his son was a cultist.

He identified his son as an official with TASUED’s student body during a chat with TheCable in Ogun on Friday, July 5.

The bereaved father said his son may have been killed for reasons unrelated to cultism.

“From what I know about my son, he is not a member of any cult. I haven’t even seen him with any dangerous item before,
” he said.

“What I can remember is that he told me about some affairs in his school. Since he was a student union executive, he told me that one of the leaders of the union was involved in the misappropriation of funds. He was hellbent on exposing that.

“I think that is where the problem is from. My son is not a member of any cult. If he was, I would have known. I am his father.

“It is unfair how students can do this to themselves. If this was a cultism issue, there would have been threats flying around or cases of retaliation.”

Police Eliminate Nine Suspected Kidnappers, Recover Arms, Ammunition In Lagos

Published

on

Nine suspected kidnappers allegedly terrorizing the areas of Isolo, Okota, Ejigbo, and Ladipo in Lagos State, have been eliminated by law enforcement officers affiliated with the Lagos State Police Command.

The suspected kidnappers were killed in a gun battle with police on Thursday night in Lagos’ Ladipo neighbourhood.

Nine AK-47 magazines, three walkie-talkies, a POS machine, a loudspeaker, four AK-47 rifles, and four locally manufactured semiautomatic pistols were retrieved from them in the interim. Also recovered are their two operational vehicles: a black Toyota 4Runner and a blue Lexus RX350.

Parading the suspect at the State Police Command in Ikeja on Friday, July 5th, the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated: “That two weeks ago, the command received credible and actionable intelligence about a dangerous and very notorious gang of kidnappers planning to kidnap some high-net-worth individuals in Lagos.

Explaining further Hundeyin said: “Upon receipt of this intelligence about two weeks ago, CP Fayoade directed the Command’s tactical teams to commence work on it. They followed up closely, monitored dutifully and were able to determine that the gang was going to strike yesterday in Ladipo area of Lagos State. “This breakthrough is in addition to several other breakthroughs we have made recently in identifying and apprehending kidnapping and armed robber gangs while they are planning their crimes. Many of these were not made public to protect the identities of the people who provided the information,” he added.

Hundeyin, on the other hand, urged everyone, including medical professionals, to keep an eye out for anyone with gunshot wounds and to notify the nearest police station or call any of our emergency numbers if they come across one.

“We also use this medium to encourage other well-meaning Lagosians to share information with us when they suspect something is wrong around them, so that we can act appropriately and quickly. We will continue to prioritize their safety and security.”

South African Police Arrest Teen Caught Assaulting His 82-year-old Grandmother In Viral Video

Published

on

A teenage boy who was seen in a disturbing video allegedly assaulting his 82-year-old grandmother, has been arrested by the Police in Kraaifontein, Western Cape province of South Africa.

The 19-year-old was arrested on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, after the heartbreaking video which shows the pensioner being beaten went viral on social media.

The disturbing incident, which occurred a month ago, has prompted widespread outrage and led to swift action by the authorities.

In the video, the grandson is seen assaulting the grandmother with his open arm, leading to a pot containing what appears to be porridge, spilling over.

The grandson beats the grandmother so hard that she drops to the floor.

The victim, a resident of Wallacedene in Kraaifontein, was found receiving treatment in the hospital for an ailment unrelated to the assault.

Despite the grandmother’s refusal to submit a statement, police investigations uncovered that the assault took place in June at the victim’s home.

Initially, when the South African Police Service (SAPS) was called to the scene, the family decided to handle the matter privately and declined police intervention.

Colonel Andrè Traut, spokesperson for the Western Cape SAPS, said the severity of the incident which became evident when the video began spreading online, compelled SAPS to open a case docket on behalf of the victim.

He said that on Wednesday night, the 19-year-old suspect, who is the grandson of the victim, was arrested at his Wallacedene residence.

He is set to appear in Blue Downs Magistrates Court once formally charged.

“Crimes against women and children are a top priority for SAPS, and we will not turn a blind eye to any form of violence in this regard,
” said Traut.

I’m Surprised Nnamdi Kanu Is Seeking Political Solution – Laolu Akande

Published

on

Laolu Akande

Laolu Akande, a former Vice Presidential aide has stated that the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), is sensitive.

He expressed surprise over the recent efforts of the IPOB leader to seek a political resolution rather than face judicial proceedings.

Akande, in an interview on Channels TV, explained that Kanu’s situation is a political problem that requires a political solution.

Akande said he expected Kanu to be bold enough to face legal proceedings on his case to prove his innocence.

He said, “Nnamdi Kanu’s issue is very sensitive. Not only does it have implications for issues of law and order, but it also has more implications on issues of politics.

“There are those who say that ‘this man has been accused of certain things, very grievous allegations, and they will have to be proven in court.’ These individuals argue that Kanu is responsible for certain chaos or statements traced to him.

“Some say a certain part of the country – the South-East – the leaders especially feel that this is a political problem, and we can sort it out by letting this man go free with guarantees that there won’t be any recurrence of what has happened.

“I think that Mr. Nnamdi Kanu should be bold enough to face these issues in court, but apparently, he’s not. With the Senators from the South-East now meeting the Attorney-General, I think we should see how it goes. From someone with the boldness and courage of Nnamdi Kanu, you would expect him to prove his innocence in court. Yet, I’m surprised he is seeking a political solution.”

See also  FG Terminates Contracts With Three Firms for Non-performance

While praising the senator representing Abia south senatorial district, Enyinnaya Abaribe’s boldness and courage, Akande disagreed with his scepticism about proving Kanu’s alleged crimes in court.

Akande suggested that if Kanu is found guilty, the government could consider a pardon for political reasons.

He added, “For Abaribe to say that these issues cannot be proven in court, I think, that’s exactly what I think can be done. Nnamdi Kanu can pose a strong defense. A court process is meant to be fair, open, and transparent. There is no such thing that cannot be proven in court. It can be sorted out in court, which is also the position of the Attorney-General.”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to complicate the judicial process. If he is found guilty, the government can consider a pardon for political correctness. If he is not guilty, he should go home.”

Court Fixes Sept 18 To Decide Ganduje’s Fate

Published

on

Abdullahi Ganduje

The Federal High Court in Abuja, has fixed September 18, to deliver judgement in the suit seeking the removal of Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, from office.

The court, presided by Justice Inyang Ekwo, fixed the date on Friday, after all the parties adopted their final briefs of argument.

The suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/599/2024, was brought before the court by aggrieved members of the party under the platform of North Central APC Forum.

The plaintiffs, led by one Saleh Zazzaga, are querying the propriety of Ganduje’s appointment as the Chairman of the APC.

They, among other things, want the court to restrain Ganduje from further parading himself as the chairman of the party.

More so, they prayed the court to issue an order, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, not to accord recognition to all actions taken by the APC, including congresses, primaries and nominations, since Ganduje became APC Chairman on August 3, 2023.

The plaintiffs told the court that Ganduje is occupying the office of the APC chairman illegally, not being from a state in the North Central geo-political zone.

They argued that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC acted in breach of the party’s constitution, when it appointed Ganduje, from Kano State in the North West geo- political zone, to replace Senator Abdullahi Adamu who is from Nasarawa State in the North Central geo-political zone.

The plaintiffs argued that Ganduje’s appointment to replace Abdullahi was contrary to Article 31.5(1) f of the APC constitution and ultra vires the powers of the NEC of the party.

See also  Makeup Artist Narrates How Home Service Client Turned Her To A Chef (Video)

They added that by the true interpretation of Article 31.5(1) of the APC Constitution 2013 (as amended), the party was bound to comply with the procedure for the replacement of an officer in the event of a vacancy and ought to appoint a member from Nasarawa State in the North Central geo- political zone into the office of the chairman of the party.

They want the court to among other things, declare that by Article 20(1) of the APC constitution 2013, as amended, Ganduje, could not be appointed as the National Chairman of the party other than through a democratically conducted election and that his current occupation of the office is illegal.

Besides, the plaintiffs want a declaration that by the provisions of Article 13 of the APC constitution 2013 (as amended), the party’s National Convention is the final authority of the party which has the power to elect or remove national officers of the party including the national chairman of the party.

The plaintiffs also want a declaration that the party’s NEC lacked the power to appoint any person to the office of the Chairman.

At the resumed proceeding in the matter on Friday, while counsel to the plaintiffs, Mr. Benjamin Davou, urged the court to grant all the reliefs by removing Ganduje as the National Chairman of the APC, all the defendants, prayed the court to uphold their preliminary objections and dismiss the suit for want of merit.

Whereas Ganduje was represented by Mr. Abdul Adamu, the APC and INEC were represented by Isiaka Dikko, SAN, and Ahmed Mohammed, respectively.
