However, fate had other plans. Ibanga’ s promising career was derailed by a devastating knee injury sustained during his time with the Nigeria U- 17 team. He recalls hearing a strange sound in his knee during training, which marked the onset of the injury that would eventually end his professional football dreams.
Despite the injury, Ibanga continued to train, concealing his condition to secure his spot in the squad for the 2011 African U- 17 Championship qualifiers against the Republic of Congo. His determination was unwavering, but the injury took its toll on his performance. Coaches noticed a significant decline in the once- dominant striker who had scored six goals in two training matches.
Subsequently, Ibanga was dropped from the national team. Medical examinations revealed the extent of his injury, with doctors warning that he had only five years of football left before the condition would permanently impair him. Devastated, Ibanga faced the harsh reality that his football career was over.
Ibanga’ s journey reflects a stark contrast between his early promise and his current circumstances. As a young player, he had envisioned football as a path to lift his family out of poverty, especially after losing his father. But with his career abruptly ended, Ibanga turned to washing goat meat in Calabar to make ends meet.
