Tennis world number one, Jannik Sinner, has accepted a three-month suspension after admitting that mistakes by his team led to two positive tests for traces of the banned substance clostebol in March last year.

Suspension Timeline and French Open Eligibility

Sinner’s suspension, which runs from February 9 to May 4, 2025, will not prevent him from competing in the French Open, scheduled to begin on May 25 at Roland Garros. The ruling allows him to make his return at the Rome Open, a key clay-court event leading up to the Grand Slam tournament.

Sinner’s Statement and WADA’s Findings

In a statement, Sinner emphasized that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) acknowledged he had no intent to cheat and did not gain a competitive advantage from the positive tests.

“This case had been hanging over me for nearly a year, and the process could have stretched until the end of 2025,” Sinner said. “I have always taken responsibility for my team and respect WADA’s strict rules as an important protection for the sport I love. On that basis, I have accepted WADA’s offer to resolve these proceedings with a three-month sanction.”

WADA confirmed that Sinner did not deliberately attempt to enhance his performance but stated that he remains accountable for the actions of his team.

Cause of the Positive Test and Resolution

The 22-year-old Australian Open champion explained that clostebol entered his system when his physiotherapist used a spray containing the substance to treat a cut before proceeding with massage and sports therapy.
